I doubt that. Just another stupid public school where the teachers aren't being paid enough (according to them) so they're doing half-assed jobs.

Like I said, what reason does the teacher have to believe it's his mother in Iraq instead of lying? If he explodes at you asking him to get off, then the kid deserved what was coming to him, those are the ing RULES. If he would have been a little more calm it would have never have happened.

the question is: are the rules ok?

i mean, it was lunchtime! it's not like he was disrupting any important activities or something. i would have understood the teacher's reaction if this happened during class, but that was not the case.

Haha, seriously?
For not hanging up when mom is out in war?

Don't they have any compassion at all?

Fuuck.. Would have done the same 365 days per year..

And if the person, in this case a mother in Iraq, happens to be dying, then let her leave a message. It's not like the mother would like to hear her son cursing before she dies.

yes...i'm sure she'd rather just leave her dying wish on his voicemail.

this is a hard call...i'm sure the student was being a dick and angry at the teacher for not letting him talk to his mom in iraq. the teacher was probably just doing her job and didn't know what the situation was. so who's at fault? i say the principal/assistant principal for handling this horribly. the mom is going to come back and be major pissed off that her son was suspended for talking to her on the phone when (and i'm assuming this) she can only make calls maybe say once a week.

the reason cellphones are banned at all times is probably because people don't want to hang up when the lunch bell rings.

with some quick search engine looking, the numbers may astound you.

"This means that the road kills more people than malaria and puts tens of millions of people in hospital. In fact, in 2000, 1.26 million people died as a result of road crashes. In some low and middle income countries, road crash victims occupy up to 10% of hospital beds."

The road is scary.

I wonder how many of those incidents involved someone speaking on a cellphone...

the son was NOT suspended for talking to her on the phone. He was suspennded based on the later actions as a result of the talking on the phone. If he had made wiser decisions, then he would still be in class.

long story short. He screwed uup, he pays for his decisions and should be very thankful he wasnt arrested. I assume there already was a precedent of such result, as it wouldnt be an option that was given.

You can record the message from voicemail and keep it forever.

Seriously, and agreeing with you, the teacher took all the right steps. It's the student's fault for not letting the school know about his situation.

well, it was during lunch, so it wasn't disrespectful to the teacher really

Good point. But the student's reaction is still disrespectful.

I can't believe the suspension was reduced. Imagine what the teacher must be going through. Now the school and district look good and the HS junior is happy. Insane.

that was perfect. what a bright kid

He was lucky, not bright.

He would be bright if he had managed not to get suspended, AND without having help from the media ;)

Well, if I were 17 and my single parent mother called me unexpectedly from Iraq, I would simply say: "Just a minute, I'm talking to my single parent mother who called me unexpectedly from Iraq". Quick, painless and as far as I've read, he didn't say it. I doubt the teacher would keep bugging him.

If I were 17 and my mother was in Iraq I would have skipped school that day and went to the beach.

IT WAS HIS MOTHER IN IRAQ
HE IS 17
SHE'S ALL HE'S GOT

Which is why both sides are wrong:

Him, for having flipped out - that was not necessary.
Them, for not having understood the situation - that was mean.
