Nice to hear Pilgrem tore it up. How was Freeland?? |
I got in just a few tracks before Freeland was done. Which was a shame because i heard from very reliable sources that Freeland was tearing it up. I have no doubt that he did, considering the man knows how to throw down a proper breaks set. Pilgrem though...OMFG ! The man was possessed while working the decks. There was a crazy broad with strobe lights hoisted on some guys (bf?) shoulder, waving those infernal things at him, and he didn't bat an eye...he was just tweaking those knobs, fine tuning that sound...that glorius, powerfull, tough break sound...Oh man, what a nite. I could only ID a few tracks which was awesome because i'm almost positive he was throwing out some whitelabels and promo's.
The God father was in full effect, and the Orange Room seemed to be disconnected from everything else that was happening in the Guv. I could tell that almost everyone who was in the Orange room didn't want to be anywhere else. People would wander off...realize that the party was not getting better and come stright back. ! :D
Only regret -- i didn't spend any time at The Drink. I shoulda have...but after my first trip to the Guv, hearing Sleepdish / Fancuilli I had this bad feeling that the drink wouldn't be any better ( I realize now that nothing coulda been more terrible then what was happening in the main room ). Oh well, Tribals almost a staple here in Toronto....if not this weekend...some other weekend. Breaks comes first. Always ! :) |

I feel sorry for all those who went to see anyone else than Danny T. Make the right decisions next time people! But I guess everyone is different and everyone likes their own type of music. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did this sunday/monday. Remember that we're all connected here by one thing: MUSIC!!! |
Shut up already...let me guess, first timer at DT event ?
This is the Freedom II review thread ! :whip: Find the DT review thread and gush all you want there. There was music on par (and even better some would say) with DT being played at Freedom.
And yes...I know DT rocked it. But so did Freeland, Myagi, D-Monic, Anguss Roberson, Red Turtle, Matt Dublin and the muthain GODFATHER Rennie Pilgrem !
Not to mention, all the junglists, all the T.DOT bad boys up in the Drink - Addy, Deko-ze, Manzone & Strong, Evil P, Sydney Blu. |

And here's my review...
Got to the Guv around 10:30pm right as they opened - we had a Guv virgin with us so we wanted space to explore before the crowd descended. The Kool Haus was jungly and so we quickly ran off to explore the Drink and the Guv - Oliver was keeping it slow and moving up tempo in there. Then we went to the Drink and damn! I believe the DJ was Sydney Blu and man did she rock! She just took the crowd and made them dance and there was nothing you could do but dance to her beat. Very impressed - wish we could kidnap her to the D for a night.
After that, we ventured down to the Orange Room and the beats were excellent in there as well. We spent some quality time dancing on the patio (much cooler out there despite the drizzle) and then Nic F came on in the Guv. That man was good - not quite what I love but good. The rest of the night we spent going between the Drink, Guv, and the Orange Room. When Deep Dish came on, we stuck around - good show as always. :) We knew we were going to Danny T afterwards so we cut short our DD experience and left around 4am for the Docks.
All in all, the Guv was good for music. The vibe was a little iffy at times and the crowding and heat got to me a few times resulting in a lot of patio visits. But all in all I give this event a 3 out of 4 stars.
Best story of the evening was running into Stingray (you rock man!) and not realizing he was on TA until after he'd videoed me lighting up the room. :) Cannot wait to see the vid you took man - no ones ever filmed me before! Those alien antenna lights are wicked.
And good to see Ms. Chanoa out as always - you're an energy ball girl! And all the other TOTAs I remember meeting (Curry?) but cannot remember all their names. |

Deep Dish is very versatile. They can spin prog house, vocal house, tech house, and nasty techno. When you go to see them, expect any one of the above. they're not Santa Claus, and they don't want your wish list. If you want requests, call Danny D.
They spun prog house Sunday, and a lot of people bitched. One of their best sets was GU-025, and that was very proggy, and spun it in...wanna guess? TO. They dropped one of the top vocal house tracks of last summer in Flashdance, and everyone bitches about it. They filled more than half of their set at Summer's End '04 with bangin techno, which just wasn't my style.
But some of you just don't seem like you can be pleased unless Deep Dish caters to your specific tastes. If you wanna rock...the Drink is a 5 minute walk. M&S never lets down.
Mark is very versatile as well. Appreciate that, along with his tech skills and how often he uses more than one deck throughout that course of the night. Don't bitch because he didn't spin the crate of his records that YOU like the most. That alone has nothing to do with his performance. Yes, [track selection] > [mixing] > [tech skills] to grade a set, but just like DD, everyone knows what Mark is capable of spinning. And what he dropped, I'm quite certain all of you knew was a part of his arsenal.
Stop bitching and stop going to see versatile DJs if you can't rock to what they dish out. |

Got into KH around 11:30 and yeah they were playing DnB but I wasn't feeling it at all so I headed straight to the Guv, Mark was on, did so-so but not the usual MO that we all know and love. Nick came on shortly after that at 12 and I literally heard his set for like 10 mins before I said " this" and off to the Drink. Wow that place was not only rammed but pumping as well. On a side note, does anyone know why the all the tables in The Drink were reserved, I mean man I was up there for a good 2 hours and couldn't even sit down just once cuz of that . Oh well, I was up there while Sydney Blu was spinning and wow she dropped some dirty sick ass house beats, next cam Evil P and I've always loved this guy from way back in my OLD System days. Headed down the the Orange Room around 1 to check out Adam Freeland and he defintely tore up that room, played lots of dirty break beats and the moment for me there was when he played his classic "We Want Your Soul" track. Once Freeland was off I headed over to the Guv cuz my gf's friends were there and she wanted to meet up with them... anyhow like everyone else has said Sleep Dish did not deliver once at all last night, soooo slow at times that I found myself standing there waiting for the beat to pick up but made the best of the night that I could since I dropped 45 bones each for 2 tix. All in all Freedom was an alright night, could've been better, oh well next up is defintely GG2 and maybe Lawler on the 18th
Overall Rating:
Drink: 9/10
Orange Room: 8.5/10
Guv: 7/10
Overall night: 8/10 |

Stop making excuses for Deepdish. Were you even there ? Did you actually hear some of their set or are you just telling us something we alreayd know ?
Versatility should not be used as an excuse to deliver a piss poor set. One of the things that differentiates a good DJ from a brilliant one is their ability to read a room, and to give the room the type of sound they want. Not just stand there and drop a set you want to push...
I wouldn't dream of telling a tag team as accomplished as Deepdish what to play, but when i hear a track with minimal elements to it play out for 5 minutes (and yes...it was 5 minutes because i actually counted the number of bars that were repeating !) then i have to wonder why they agreed to do a 8 hour set. Hell, just drop a 2 hour set and move along. Keeping a crowd interested in a set for that duration requires something special, and as much as i've believed that DD have been capable of doing that in the past, the type of music they are pushing these days simply doesn't cut it.
That being said, there were plenty of people at the Guv rocking out to the dish, so maybe it's just a matter of taste. Personally, i think i've heard the best from them...and that was 7-8 years ago. If I want some Deepdish, i'll stick to their productions and remixes. They have always managed to hit gold with those. The live sets leave much to be desired...
Finally. People have a right to bitch if they were present at a party. Paid money to be entartained and left feeling short changed. Now, although i can't say i was disappointed with Freedom. I will post an honest review and say they (DD) were the major dissapointment of an otherwise FANTASTIC night of partying.
For anyone to step into a review thread and tell people not to bitch, and not to go see a 'versatile' dj if you can't rock out to them is ing ridiculous ! Not all of us are dj-whores who gratefully lap up everything that's spit down our throats and then flash a toothy grin and say 'thank you sir, can i have some more'... :toothless
I won't talk about Mark Oliver because i only caught 30 minutes of his set. He's been excellent on occasions, and very ordinary on others. I'm not sure what moves the man, so i'm not going to knock his talent. I do believe he is as good or bad as the talent that surrounds him. Maybe he didn't want to upstage the headliners...I'm not sure. He's one of toronto's finest...but he didn't show it on Sunday. Sorry Mark - but that's this clubbers humble opinion. |
