Sorry but they just plain sucked. I didn't start listening to EDM last week so I've heard a number of their sets, essential mixes and otherwise. I assumed they had the talent to put on a great show, especialy since they've done so a few times here already. It seams that the title Sleepdish is well deserved, I had wondered why people called them that.
I think you're just trying to convince yourself.
:haha: |
Sorry to kill your argument, but Ryan (mindspin) said it best when he said the set was VERY similar to the Tribehaus 7.5 hour set available for download at the mixing bowl which also happens to be the one I posted the tracklist for in the roll call thread. They did play, like he said, at least 20 tracks from that set on Sunday night. The sets sounded very similar. The Guv crowd, and to an extent, a bunch of the Tranceaddict crowd, are not fans of this style. All the "DDTT" fans off this site were at DT. Yes Deep Dish ended on a ty note, but for the most part, it wasn't "bad dj'ing" that garnered so many negative reviews, it's different tastes. Individual opinions hold the most strength in this regard. I can sit here and say that RAP ROCK sucks but you listen to it and probably think it doesn't suck. How much credibility does my "rap rock suck" statement hold to you?

What a night! When we entered the kool haus around 230 all I knew was the quest to find the Dish in the guvy was on. I have to say I was quite impressed by Addy, well worth a hour of my time to hear some of his set. But, there is no doubt in my mind who was the that night. Deep dished it out in my opinion. Say Hello set me free. Yeah, they were losin' it near the end but hey so was I. I can't believe I made it til 920...All I know is I left with a smile on my face and I moved to the beat and it was well worth my ticket to Freedom.

Now onto my review.
We (Me, Katy[MissK] and Kirk[not a TA]) got to guv relatively early, and went in through the Kool Haus. I don't listen to jungle but I do see the potential for it to grow on me. Not something to grow into my fav. genre but something I could enjoy a night out listening to. That being said I woulda loved to have had a Jungle night but I was there for deep dish. I met up with my friend Nema in the Kool Haus, who stood out amongst the crowd as a big time deep dish fan.

Props goes out to my buddy Nema for the great effort he put into his outfit. We then make our way over to the guv from the Kool Haus and meet up with the rest of the crew. I was surprised to see my buddy Pat making it out after he told me he couldn't make it. He was bullting me the entire time because I'm nutorious for randomly showing up to parties that I tell people I'm not going to.
We go around to the patio and run into Spankmeister and Kabelicious (the name's Karim, not curry :p, that's ok, Jem_Hadar called me curry in a review thread after meeting me for the first time).

Anyways, onto the music. Nic's set was great. It had just the right dreamy element to progressive that reminded me ever so much of Luke Chables GREAT set at Ultra Spin 7. I was loving the tracks. Unfortunately, I missed the xpander remix. I get goosebumps thinking about what it woulda sounded like had I caught it. Can't imagine the feeling I woulda gotten if I had heard it.
Deep Dish come on and me and some friends crowd the stage railing for a photo op. Ali and Sharam both got in pics with the uber fanboy nema (those pics coming soon), and Katy snuck a pic with Ali.

There set starts and I liked it alot for the most part. I had listened to their most recent available to download set (from March 2005) and it was very similar in terms of sound and pace. Some will say they started a little slow, etc. but it's because it's a long set they were to play. Eventually it picked up and found it's niche in a comfortable spot of great progressive tracks. I'm pretty sure I heard SAY HELLO twice (original and a remix). I went to Guv knowing what to expect out of their sound, and I heard what I had expected. However by the end of the night, I was feeling drained, and the music itself was drained. The light from the open doors was not welcomed, and the lack of crowd enthusiasm killed the party. Deep Dish ended it abruptly and on came the lights.
A highlight of the night. My buddy (who shall remain nameless) showed up to the "FREEDOM" party. Freedom is in quotes because this friend had been under house arrest until his court date (June 1st) for pill possession. Ironically, throughout his month and a half of house arrest, FREEDOM was the party he came to.
Here are some pics from the night:

Anyways, the rest of the pictures are found here. They are split into 2 parts because the one photobucket ran out of available disk space. Enjoy.

I know what you mean but a bunch of the sets I've heard from them over the years gave me fairly high expectations. I'm not saying that my opinion is fact or anything but I talked to a lot of people who held a similar opinion to mine, a few of which have different musical tastes than I do. |

| I'm not going to keep arguing about it...I've made my points, and some of you think the way you think, so that's that. Rock on... |

| Well had a great time sunday night. I spent most of my night in the Drink where the music was off the hook. Deep Dish played ok, but Deko-Ze & Mazone and Strong were amazing. Was very disappinted with Mark Oliver, hope he plays better this upcoming Sunday here in Buffalo @ The Warehaus. I am sure Joe Drust will pick up the slack though, he always rocks. If I had my choice though I would book Mazone & Strong here in a second. If anyone knows that song that sounds like r2-d2 from star wars all flanged out over a sick house beat let me know, I must have heard that song 4 times in 5 hours. Deep Dish, Deko-Ze & Addy all played it. |

Deep Dish is very versatile. They can spin prog house, vocal house, tech house, and nasty techno. When you go to see them, expect any one of the above. they're not Santa Claus, and they don't want your wish list. If you want requests, call Danny D.
They spun prog house Sunday, and a lot of people bitched. One of their best sets was GU-025, and that was very proggy, and spun it in...wanna guess? TO. They dropped one of the top vocal house tracks of last summer in Flashdance, and everyone bitches about it. They filled more than half of their set at Summer's End '04 with bangin techno, which just wasn't my style.
But some of you just don't seem like you can be pleased unless Deep Dish caters to your specific tastes. If you wanna rock...the Drink is a 5 minute walk. M&S never lets down.
Mark is very versatile as well. Appreciate that, along with his tech skills and how often he uses more than one deck throughout that course of the night. Don't bitch because he didn't spin the crate of his records that YOU like the most. That alone has nothing to do with his performance. Yes, [track selection] > [mixing] > [tech skills] to grade a set, but just like DD, everyone knows what Mark is capable of spinning. And what he dropped, I'm quite certain all of you knew was a part of his arsenal.
Stop bitching and stop going to see versatile DJs if you can't rock to what they dish out. |
