************ of whatever position we take with regard to terrorism, the undeniable fact must remain that it exists and will continue to exist ************ of the shape or form that it takes. The 21st century has simply afforded it different avenues and methods of destruction - it has not conjured the notion from the depths of nowhere. That said, I do not understand the extent to which people get angry and "shocked" when such events as these occur and furthermore - when they are countered with violence (read: US in Iraq). What do you honestly expect? The most powerful nation in the world to just sit back and take it? "Oh please sir Osama, bomb our country to your wit's end. Please fly planes into our buildings. We shall march on!" Obviously NOT. The fact is that actions speak a hell of a lot louder than words. And diplomacy OBVIOUSLY has no part in terrorism because if it did - terrorism would not have an outlet in the first place! We would all be DIPLOMATIC. The first job of any "civilized" (for lack of a more accurate term) is to show such groups (not NATIONS - entire COUNTRIES do not advocate such behaviour. Am I the only one that finds it distressing when countries are named as culprits for terrorism - when in fact it's usually one well-networked group of people who just *happen* to either come from or reside in that country?) that advocate violence and terrorism that they are fighting a losing battle, and not because we are necessarily more intelligent than them but simply because we have FAR MORE resources than they do. Once that poignant fact hits home, then BRING ON THE DIPLOMACY.

This is not to say that I advocate violence. But it's quite obvious that people who fly planes into buildings one day are not going to join a roundtable discussion on world peace the next day. Like - COME ON. To be able to deal with persons of such disposition - you first have to beat them on their own playing field. Once that is accomplished, you can move on to introducing them to your way of dealing with things. The fact is - terrorist groups are NEVER going to one day just throw in the towel and say, "Oh, you're right. We apologize for being such assclown bastards for the last ohhhhh 100-ish years. What were we thinking?" It's a matter of pride. And it's pride that is routed so incredibly deep within their culture that it first must be broken for anything constructive to happen from there. Those who have an ego to salvage cannot see the forest for the trees. Anyone with an friend knows what I'm talking about. The sooner we accept this type of behaviour (and I'm not talking about condoning the behaviour - but just realizing that it can and does happen) as part of the world's landscape - the sooner we will be able to deal with it on an international scale.

This isn't a reflection of any religion. The fundamental basis of Islam is about peace and respect (much like Christianity - GO FIGURE!). People that commit such atrocities simply front themselves with an alliance to religion to attempt to justify their backwards argument. Just because there's one bad apple, it doesn't make the entire tree rotten.

ok I'm done. I'm going to have a beer now.

Umm...you have to go back several centuries but it was commonplace. How do you think the Turks wrested control of Constatinople (now Istanbul) in the 15th Century? It was the main Christian city in the Middle Ages.

Spain was nearly conquered totally by Muslims throughout the 9th-11th centuries, but eventually drove them out by the 1480s. Greece was subjected to 4 centuries of Muslim Turkish rule until 1821.
