Passenger plane on fire at Toronto airport
Last Updated Tue, 02 Aug 2005 16:37:00 EDT
CBC News
Flames and black smoke were pouring out of a passenger airplane at Toronto's Pearson International Airport Tuesday afternoon, two hours after operations at the airport were grounded because of severe thunderstorms in the area.

There is no word on how many passengers were on board or what their condition is.

There are reports that the airplane was trying to take off or land in a downpour when it skidded off a runway at about 3:50 p.m.

It crashed through barriers and ended up in a small ravine at the far west end of the airport, the fuselage tipped down and the aircraft's tail in the air.

Rescue crews are on the scene.

There is no word on which airline operates the plane.

More details later.

Air France jet bursts into flames at Toronto’s Pearson airport

TORONTO (CP) - A passenger jet burst into flames after skidding off the runway at Toronto's Pearson International Airport.

The type of plane and number of passengers was not immediately available. Smoke billowed from a wooded area near Highway 401, Canada's busiest highway.

Peel police say the craft was an Air France passenger jet that was attempting to land when it ran into trouble.

Sgt. Glyn Griffiths said passengers saw flames from the window but couldn't say whether they had been removed from the plane.

Emergency crews were enroute to the scene.

Man I've been in situations like this before when one of the engines malfunctioned and shut down mid-air (KLM)....and then we were kept in the air for 45 in' minutes to land...
