Tayfoon
Am I ?

Mode Hookers - Breathe is a perfect example
Floorfiller
well for me personally i think you're off. i can't say that some people aren't jumping the bandwagon...but i don't like being grouped in with those people.

i know if i say this people are gonna think i'm an elitist bastard, but...

i was pretty far ahead of this bandwagon trend along with a bunch of others that i know are still fans of this genre.
DJ RJT
I still like cheese.
dj_bas
:wtf: ...armin likes electro? like electro electro or markus schulz - electro hairspray electro?
Aiwendil
Yeah that's okay, none of those people actually like Electro. YOU don't even listen to Electro. Mode Hookers isn't electro. So your worst fears are over, I guess.

see and that's exactly why it isn't a bandwagon. i don't like straight up real electro...and i doubt most people that like your example mode hookers would either...

it really depends what time period you're talking about...electro goes all the way back to the 70's...and that's why its ridiculous when people say what we're listening to these days isn't really electro...their right it's not...but it is influenced by it among other things...

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I've been around a while so I've seen quite a few edm genres go from uncool to cool back to uncool or simply replaced by the next newest trend. The fault lies with ppl who believe the are more 1337 because they listen to the 'cutting edge' genre. For myself I like a tune because it appeals to me not because its trance, house, acid, or electro. By you posting such a thing you seem to be very caught up with being "right" and judging ppl by the genre of music they listen to. So in the end I think you're a...

Well you see, since around 2001 there's been a big strain of House that more and more people like to call "Electro". This came from a guy named Larry Tee who threw all these parties in New York and made this mix cd and website all under his made-up name "Electroclash". All these artists, artists like Felix Da Housecat, Adult., Ladytron, and so on were all summarily tagged as "Electroclash" by popular magazines and other media outlets. What these artists all had in common was a retro-80's/glam/pop feel to their tracks, but most of all they had in common a rolling BUZZING synth line. That BUZZING synth caught on year by year until Techno artists and trance artists started using it as well. So over time you've gotten people, from the orignal term "Electroclash" (which is wrong anyway, because the music has nothing to do with actual Electro, nor is influenced by Electro in any way), calling all music with this BUZZZING synth "Electro", "Electro-House", "Electro-Trance", or "Electro-Techno". Basically, "Electro" has become a buzz word(hah) for ignorant people to describe the latest strain of Italo Disco/Synthpop, since about 2001.

Now real Electro, which has been around since the 70's, is a much less pop-oriented type of music. There are no diva's singing along to the track, there are no flighty House or Italo or Synthpop influences. Electro was around before those anyway. Electro is often dark, often sounds old-fashioned, robotic (not in small part because of the genre's use of vocoders), "tinny"(robotic), FUNKY, uses haunting atmospheric strings, and is futuristic all at the same time. Old-fashioned because in structure little has changed since the 80's, mostly just the equipment. Sounds futuristic because Electro has always had a running Robot/Space/Alien/Computer future theme throughout. It is in general relatively atonal when compared to "Electroclash". It is in general not driven by a BUZZING synth.

Indicators that the music you are listening to is not Electro: Diva vocals, pop chorus structure, BUZZING synth, standard metronomic 4/4 beat.

Indicators that the music you are listening to is Electro: Vocoders, Vocals talking about space or the future, beeps, zaps, lasers, broken beat, old yet new "feel".

Electro can have a BUZZING synth, and it doesn't necessarily have to be broken beat, but 98% does not and is not.

To answer your question, DJ Hell, Tiga, and Italian X-Rays are not what I would consider Electro. Silicon Scally, Dynamix II, Bass Junkie, Bitstream, Scape One, Octagon Man, Radioactive Man, The Dexorcist, Aux 88, Autobot-1000, E.M.S., MAS 2008, and Freezie Freekie are just a few of the artists who make Electro and have been making Electro, in some cases, for over 10 years.

And here, if you like, are some audio samples of Electro:
Kraftwerk - The Man-Machine
Jackal & Hyde - Dark Star
Dynamix II - The Two That Return
Bitstream - Anno Domini
Middle Men - We Cannot Be Destroyed!
Dynamik Bass System - Lorton City
Sync 24 - The Warg
Klystron - Digital Science
Manasyt - Clandestine
Nomadic - Alphaphix (Andrea Parker Remix)
Swag - Drum Hydraulics (Silicon Scally Remix)
MAS 2008 - Being A Number

Which is all "New" Electro made after 1990, except for Man-Machine.
