no that was howells last time playing (or closing)his residency at ARC. I have that set and Cherish it. Those two (Howells and Tenaglia) essentially got their own nights to throw a closing party.
Tenaglia's night was unreal. Here's my review from it. I hope the closing of System will be just as legendary to Toronto. I know I will miss system. It was the first Electronic Club I ever went to and for that it will have a place in my heart.
"Danny Tenaglia ARC CLOSING april 23rd.
wow what an awesome night.
There is no way that I could possibly explain in words the atmosphere inside that legendary club on its last friday night party. That said, I'll stop now....
Ok, I'll try anyway.
I got there at about 12:30am to a mostly EMPTY club. there were maybe 20 people in the whole place, including security! I spent the next little bit of time exploring around the club in all of its nooks and crannys so that I'd be able to find my way around better should the club fill up later. By 2am the crowd had picked up and it looked as though we would be in for a fun night. Danny showed up at 1am but opted to hang out in the crowd and chat with people for about an hour or so before taking the decks. Danny came across as a supper nice guy and got me in a great mood for the rest of the night. He played the perfect host all night long, something I've never seen a dj do as well as him. It seemed like he was trying to meet everyone and find out where everybody was from. He started his set with a massive list of shout outs including everyone in Toronto that made it out and those that couldn't make it and even recalled his night at industry a few years ago.
His set started off slow and full of old house tracks. The pace was slow until about 3:45am when it started picking up. By this time the club was packed. By 5am I was thinking I needed to sit for a bit if I was going to make it through the rest of the night until the end at 12 noon. I moved into the lounge area behind the dj booth and chilled with a bunch of great people including Tracey (tibelurkergrrl) and few others from her group that made into town for the night. The sound in the whole place was great! When I left I had no sense of ringing and my hearing was intact despite standing very close to a main set of speakers for most of the night.
In the lounge area I even had the oportunity to hang out with the sound tek for the night. He apeared to be really into the night and having a blast hanging out and chating with with all sorts of people. The atmosphere in this back room gave a very warm like feeling as you could tell a lot of these new yorkers had basically become family over the last few years by coming together on Fridays under this roof.
The 'surprise' for the night came as Danny introduced Celeda from Chicago whom Danny had colaborated with to create the track 'Be Yourself' which these friday nights had been named after for the last five years. The crowd went nuts as the vocals came out in true live emotion. It was one of those moments in club history being relived then and there that brought the whole room together with smiles evrywhere. Old and new clubers got along in perfect fashion the whole night. I met a few people recalling the days of studio 54 and drawing comparisions to the the two eras of NYC nightlife.
In the end I only managed to last until roughly 2pm. After realising that I had been in a club for 12.5 hours and had not eaten any food in even longer, it was time for me to start making my trek home to raid the fridge.
As I left the Arc with big smile on my face I began walking the 53 New York blocks back to Port Authority to catch my bus home. Even after having been on my legs dancing all night the walk home was great, it ended up being one of the nicest mornings in the City (in terms of weather and spirit) I can recal ever having.
Thank you Arc/ Danny. I'll never forget that last friday night at 6 Hubert st." |

Yea, it has a place in a lot of people's hearts, as you can tell. Danny [Howells] won't dissappoint. It'll be an incredible party. |

This is shocking news!
There are too many good times to really recall, even though I only started going last year.
I'll always remember the first time I ever seen Steve Lawler own a crowd properly in 2004, and definitely all the TA gatherings in the front room (with TA DJs Max Q, Gamma).
Random memory: I remember back when TA DJ, Karim E (aka Nrg2Nfinit) spun in the front room, he left the decks during his last tune "Vincent De Moor - Fly Away" and a small circle of TAs including Karim and myself kicked it oldschool. The floor was practically empty by that time, but it was one of those intimate moments I’ll remember.
That said, I hope the people behind the club will continue to create more great nights in the future. |
ahh memories |

I agree. I think he'll do an awesome job and take everyone there on quite the ride through the night.
ps system is going to be rammed! There were so many different Groups of people (let alone individuals) that made that place a second home!
When do tickets go on sale? |

| Very sad news indeed...I had the opportunity to go to System a few times on my visits to TO.The place had a nice vibe to it and definatly was one of the clubs that I actually enjoyed when there.(Boa would be the other one)Is it ust me or is Toronto getting more and more commercial with gimmicks taking center stage instead of vibe and atmosphere.. |

Damn, this kills....
I move away and both my favourite venues die out :(
All the best to Orin, Ryan, and all the staff that treated me so well over the 3+yrs I practically lived there, and the last two that I came by for a visit.
System for me took the family vibe that my time at Industry created and just blew it up 1000x, and is the reason I ended up meeting most of the TAs beyond fist pumping, leg kicking dancefloor madness.
My favourite had to be the Scaife years before the association with Guv... doing shots of Jaeger with mark and the boys in the booth, the best couches in the city, and the best staff and clientele to chat with.... knowing almost everyone, from coatcheck to security, to management on a first-name basis, and most of the people there... well, that was special...Boa came close for me as well, but it was too short a time to compare..apples and oranges I suppose.
Not to forget you John. From my TA houseparty I threw in about my 3rd week on th site, to the Invasions, you were an instrumental part of the good times not only I enjoyed, but most of the people reading this thread. Aside from weekend-warrior comraderie, I don't think you, or half the people I've spent my hedonistic weekends with really know how much I respectred and appreciated many of you.
The past few years have been exceptionally difficult for me, and System replaced the pain with untold joy. For that, I thank you all.
My annual b-day drinks at System are coming on the 26th.. guess I'll have to come on the 25th to make up for next yr! |
