Nusty, I would prefer if you got your facts straight first (No offense). Dubai's income from oil is only 3%. Balance is from trade and tourism. Free trade does wonders (it also helps when you have oversears infulx of investment).

Current GDP figure is around 3%, you're right.

But all these projects you see are pushed forward and paid for by the Emir which has loads of money from... you guessed it, oil.

Decades of oil revenues.

Malek, the coroporation behind Dubai's sucess, in todays world is Emaar + its subsidiaries (which ironically is owned by Shaikh Mohammed). I have to say, the man has some really good advisors, because whatever is happening is going in the right direction. Its also about marketing. They are par excellence in that field.

Dubai when compared to Abu Dhabi (the capital) is really poor in oil money. I guess being less conservative helps. Its a boom for the city. Real estate has over 50% (on average) appreciation (per annum) right now, and now they opened DFM (Dubai Financial Market) to the public. At this moment (strike it while its hot) DFM is a money making machine. How can you beat no income or sales tax?

you guys are funny.

I prefer conservative architecture over conservative (if not backward) society.

Plenty of liberal societies with non-conservative architecture too.

Besides I was only commenting on their buildings, not their politics or laws.

No taxes? 50% real estate appreciacion? Holy .

On a side note, i was just looking at that earlier photo of the Dubai night-time skyline and thinking how great it would be to live in that 800m building. On top of the world, both literally (because it's the tallest building) and figuratively (because no city will be a match for Dubai).

Moving right along...

1. How hard is it to move / get a citizenship there?
2. How common is English? Do most speak it? How about in business?

you can't get citizenship there. if you buy property, you get 99 yrs resident visa.
you can find work if you are well qualified (they love foreigners)

I think English is more used than Arabic.

it's a nice place, but not as nice as you guys think. a lot of construction going on now. It will be nicer when most of is finished

a city's "greatness" is measured by much more than shiny things...
Protosis
Engineering degree plus canadian experience = "Oh my god I love you, on me and I'll love you for it." over there

Or so I hear..

And of course Dubai's success is that the city is one of the freest, and is basically run like a coporation.

Not to mention many investors rich from oil revenues would rather invest in a very profitable Dubai, then a falling america.

Almost looks like something from a Sci fi movie.

The City of the Future!

The only down side is, the people who own everything are a bunch of stinky oil greedy Arabs!

Yea, I've heard that too.
You're not allowed to own any property unless you're actually 'from' the country.
I think that's the reason...anyone know why?
