I'm still thinking whether i should go visit my friend who works in Dubai this new years. This may be like a once in a lifetime opportunity. However, most of these projects aren't complete though. Is the alpine skiing dome opened yet???

Yea, I've heard that too.
You're not allowed to own any property unless you're actually 'from' the country.
I think that's the reason...anyone know why?

because they are racist bastards.

Dude, go. Seriously. And yes, one of the two skiing places is open. I think the other's due next year.

you can't get citizenship there. if you buy property, you get 99 yrs resident visa.
you can find work if you are well qualified (they love foreigners)

I think English is more used than Arabic.

Interesting. That should work. Can they arrange mortgages for foreigners or does the property have to be purchased in cash? Also, are there any limitations that "residents" face, which "citizens" do not?

I don't get it. The guy above said that you get a 99-year visa when you buy property. What would be the point of that if you could only buy property if you're already a citizen?
4-play
1. You can't get citizenship no matter what if your not an Arab from any of the 7 emirates

2. You can now own land no matter if you are Arab or a citizen from any other country. For as long as you own the property, you and your family will have a residence visa. This was not the case before, and I guess they realized that to get global recognition, they would have to lax the rules a bit

3. Mortgages are a big thing in Dubai now. As long as you own property you can get a mortgage

4. Beware: Dubai has now become extremely expensive.

5. It is really not as easy to get a job there as it used to. They are pretty adamant on the 'skilled labor' part

3. Do you mean that mortgages are easy to get if you need them for property, or that mortgages are easy to have if you already have paid-off property to put up as security?

4. How expensive?

5. I wouldn't need a job. A business would be nice though. Wonder if things are much different there than they are here. I wouldn't think so?

I've seen some pics of areas that looked VERY poor
4-play
1. If your financially sound, getting a mortgage should not be a problem at all for your property (Mortgages are given towards a property only)

2. For the hig end things (designer clothes, etc), it is cheaper to get them here. I've seen the prices go up over the years. But then again, if you want to live on a bidget, Dubai can cater to that too.

3. Its really not that different now to open up a business in Dubai. The norm used to be that you would have to have a 'local' sponsor, but now there are places where you don't need that too. Depending on the nature of your business they have different themed areas. For eg. Dubai Internet City, Media city, etc.

4. Dubai does have some poor areas, but they are pretty good when compared to the rest of the world. The way of thinking with foreign labor before was to come to make money in Dubai, and then leave. Now its ' come to Dubai, and make it their new home'.

I would strongly suggest that whoever is interested to visit, make an attempt to go and check it out. It is a very impressive city.
