I sat down and gave this song a listen again last night. And still... I don't see why people rave about it so much.

Neither do I. Quite flat piano trance, really. Compared to a lot of PVD's discography, it sounds very average to me.
Grrrrr
Same here, didn't like it when i first started listening to trance still don't like it now.

It's average at best...

This is all my opinion of course

It's actually about 12 years old, and everyone on Earth has heard the E-Werk mix. And so what if it is? There are trance tracks from the same era and years before (including many by PVD himself) that are far, far stronger.

i think it's an incredible track to hear live

Maybe that is what I am missing. I had the same feeling for Aftermath until I heard it on club speakers. Totally different tune to hear live. ;)

yer some tunes do sound better live, for an angel certainly does. I thought aftermath was a good track, but then i heard nick warren play it in a club a couple of weeks ago, blew me away, was immense.

I think what made this track so special is that this song is a lot of people's first melodic trance song they heard and or Robert Miles "Children". Yeah to today's standards they are both a bit typical, but look back 8 to 10 years ago and people were in aww of these tunes. To me, these are the tunes will never go away from our conscious, they are simplistic yet still timely. It's kind of like early rock hits from the 60s from the Beatles, Stones, the Who, Jimmy Hendrix etc. They had many great, unforgettable tunes, and sure since then rock has become even more sophsticated, but a lot of these guys pushed the boundaries, they created something both timely and catchy, so their songs are ingrained in a lot of modern American and European culture. I think of these songs in the same light, they are classics, even if there is stuff nowadays which is "better" or more "sophsticated".

this song is pretty average but the CROWD in a club makes it great...I remember one time PVD played the MVL mix in san francisco, crowd went NUTZZZ, everybody just screamed(so loud, couldnt hear the piano for a couple of seconds) and raised their hands, it was some moment

Obviously i love the record,
When most people think Paul Van Dyk, the also think 'For An Angel'

But Paul Van Dyk's finest hour has got to be 'Words'
