Take ATRC. When it first came out, I quite liked it, as did a lot of people. Then it got overplayed. WAAAAAYYYYY overplayed. It was in every single set. The forum turned against the track completly. It converted a lot of non-trancers.
But I still quite like it. Again, theres better tunes out there. But its pretty good. I dont download a huge number of livesets so I didnt hear it everytime one of Armins sets got recorded. But I did get sick of SEEING it in tracklists. I kept saying 'why cant he play something new'. And Im sure a lot of other people did.
I think something that hasnt been touched in here is that theres a difference between getting sick of SEEING a track in a tracklist, and HEARING the track over and over.
Just dont listen to a track ad infinitum and you wont get tired of it. If I heard ATRC in a liveset today, I wouldnt complain about it, even though the entire forum would be up in arms. |
Exactly! I got sick of Sandstorm and ATRC when they were overplayed a few years back, but since I haven't listened to those tracks in a long time, I probably would like it now. It just depends on your tolerance and if you can stand hearing it over and over. Some people can, some people can't. I guess the same can be said about For An Angel as well. I guess the same thing can be said about ANYTHING, whether it's a movie or music. See or hear it too much, and it does start to get tiresome. With movies, you might watch it so much that you know all the lines and the plot, but after not watching it for years, you might like it and even find something new. I know that happened with me and Jurrasic Park. I watched it over and over for years, especially when it first came out in 1993, and i got tired of it. Then after watching it again a few years back, I really enjoyed it again, even though I did know alot of the lines of the movie (I still do..). I guess the same thing can be applied to For An Angel.. |

You have a fairly simple synth line and not a while pile of layering. It works. It works well.
Its better than 95% of the e that comes out thesedays, which has huge epic synths and has got too many layers, just to show off because thats what Reason can do.
For an Angel is a classic. Like it or not. And it always will be. Sure, theres better stuff out there. But theres a hell of a lot of worse stuff. |
Agreed.
'For an Angel', along with 'Another Way', are two of PvD's greatest tracks and are what made him the legend he is. Definitely the two tracks that really got me into the genre. |

What makes it so popular is not it's quality, but it's accessibility. It's safe, bland, inoffensive corporate trance--like how U2 makes milquetoast rock music. Anyone can listen to this song. From grandmothers to 8 year olds. A simple, tepid, meandering piano diddy perfect for mass appeal.
At the time that it was released (1993), not to much trance was concerned with watering itself down so the mainstream could like it. It would be another two years before someone decided to do that again (Children). |
