Then I guess I just dont like it. I was at CP and thought it was a mediocre night at best. And none of the tunes at the end stood out for me except for Time of Our Lives or whatever the hell that song is called. I like that song a lot, for some odd reason. :p |

It's true, the melody is very average, and sounds like something any bored musician could come up with while making breakfast.
What makes it so popular is not it's quality, but it's accessibility. It's safe, bland, inoffensive corporate trance--like how U2 makes milquetoast rock music. Anyone can listen to this song. From grandmothers to 8 year olds. A simple, tepid, meandering piano diddy perfect for mass appeal.
At the time that it was released (1993), not to much trance was concerned with watering itself down so the mainstream could like it. It would be another two years before someone decided to do that again (Children). |

All the people I know who LOVE the song, have a very special memory connected to the song, so it`s not just the "music / notes" of the song, but it`s what people connect with the song.
For example, my special memory with "For an angel" was last year:
Since there was (again) no loveparade in Berlin, some Berlin residents decided to something they called "planet pro Berlin", which was not a parade but some stages along the old route of the loveparade (between the Siegessaeule [that has the angel from the song on the top] and the Brandenburger Tor). Two other GTAs and myself decided that we wanted to show our support and have our own "stage" at the ppb. Well, we essentially had a small truck, that we put some equipment on to be honest, but we did it with all our heart.
We got Aly&Fila, Marc van Linden, Menno de Jong and Kyau vs. Albert (to name just the international know ones) to play at our truck for free (we paid everything else ourselfs with the help from donations from other GTAs and Jordan who organises the Lovebase each year in Berlin at the time of the loveparade) and we had the best atmosphere at our little truck of the whole ppb. You should have seen all the happy people dancing and having fun and you could feel the love that was in the air and you knew, that this scene was not dead at all.
Before the last song, NetX held a little speach and we started the last song which was: For an angel. Everyone was screaming and clapping and partying and it was so emotional that I (among a few others) started crying when it was over. That was one of the most emotional moments of my life and it will always be connected with "For an angel" and I will always think of this moment, whenever I hear it.
Like I said, I know many more people who have had similar experiences with this song and thus have a connection with it. That`s why this song is so special to a lot of us, not because of some breakdown or something similar. :) |

It's not that I'm becoming predictable insomuch as the same questions, topics, threads and arguments keep coming up and repeating themselves on these forums. And, really, why would my opinion on them change?
What would you rather I say about For an Angel/PvD that I haven't already said in every other For an Angel/PvD thread. Seriously....you may have heard my arguments countless times, but others haven't. It's just quick cutnpasting for the uninitiated at this point.
If you want me to stop with the repetitive answers, stop asking the repetitive questions. Ask me about something else.
(and I'm flattered that you are so enamoured and obsessed with my viewpoints on things to the point where you have memorized whole passages and metaphors that I frequently use. That gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling, knowing I have such adoring adulation out there....it means my demogoguery is actually working) |

I've never heard you say this about For An Angel before. Montana's probably referring to the constant cynical angle you take on any trance record that doesn't stick to the Ye Olde Formula, especially as you don't know why PVD made the record to sound like that, or have any real evidence to support the idea that it was to cash-grab. Certainly, due to the lack of commercial success of the record (and trance in general) when it was first released, why make that record at all? Why not head off into euro-dance?
It's quite possible that PVD simply made the record like that because he wanted to. That it evolved on the original musical idea is apparently heresy to you, and so the automatic cynic response comes into play. That's what's repetitive. |
