hes not giving a definition

fact is, it takes so much musical knowledge to compose a piece like Mozart's "Requiem" than it takes to compose [insert your favorite trance track here]. Back then you couldn't grab a computer and try out different beats and samples to see what worked the best.

Composers like Mozart, Vivaldi, Beethoven were geniouses and prodigies with a incredibly extensive knowledge of music and instruments. Their minds are in a level beyond of any edm producer and musician thats ever lived. If you can't appreciate their music, i don't think you should even be talking about music because you obviously don't understand it.
Like said before, the music of these composers speaks for itself. I feel sorry for you if you can't find the beauty in it.

That's funny you know? Considering I have a collection of classical peices on many CD's. I like the idea of liking classical? I worship 'Siegfried's Funeral March from Götterdämmerung by Richard Wagner' for crying out loud. What more do I need to do in order to KNOW i like classical?

I don't have to say WHY it's better, the music speaks for itself. Oh wait, you don't like classical, so I guess it won't click in your mindless brain. Seriously, what kind of moron compares trance to classical music?

I never said it couldn't be, but I doubt one song, even one genre such as trance, can compare to all the Classical Periods. I'm sorry, you're just brainwashed with the idea that trance is 'better' than classical. Hell, it's even more insulting that it's TRANCE you're comparing classical too.

There must be, but, since I'm open to all music, including trance and all other electronica I guess that doesn't make me a pseudo-intellectual like you say, huh?

Don't have to say why huh? Just proves my point then, you're a pseudo-intellectual , can't even give a reason for your elitist opinion.

I wasn't comparing trance to classical in the sense that they are even remotely close in being enjoyable. Classical is non-stop boring, trance is almost never boring. Speaking of boring, you're boring. If you were logical and gave reasons for your opinions then you might not be, but I doubt that's gonna happen, you're probably far too busy listening to classical geniuses huh. And I don't doubt their genius, what they did with what they had available was amazing, and yet it's still boring in comparison to what can be (and is) done today. It's always the losers who want to be smart but never can be that listen to that outdated trash. Here's a tip: stop being a loser, logic will get you much further than boring music will.

For someone who creates both (classical & trance),

I think its important to separate two main elements in music :
1 is sound fx & percussion, and 2 is harmony ( chord progression, melodies etc.) - actual notes as a score page.

When you say classical is 'better' then trance you probably mean the harmony element is more complex. and thats true you cant argue with that. trance though ( as all other modern styles) lacks the harmony in expense of the fx+percussion side. Music or most music i think has gotten very simple if you compare it to classical, even considering the fx element( or whatever you can call it if you understand what im talking about). but thats a whole different issue.

So you could say all in all, classical is more complex than trance. But i don't think it makes it better, better is a mater of taste. Trance as other styles has other things to offer rather then complex melodies such as more energy, fuller sounds and a beat of course.
(And in an unrelated argument trance (most tracks) complexity really stinks next to other electronic styles, except for the old trance at least :\ )

Chopin is the king

Ive started a similar topic before, it maybe so that classical is very more so complex than trance but trance and classical defantly bring about the same feeling people are describing.

I think its mostly to do with both genres not having many vocals, so you are kind of left to your own interpritation/thoughts, and thats just where the similarity lies.

Tiesto > Mozart

:D
DJ Cinos
No.

And I'd also like to add that classical isn't actually complex. IDM and such bypasses it by far... classical is just more complicated to make.

i dont know i would say its the modern day classical music, everytime i listen to classical music for more than an hour and after that i turn on something electronic (trance, house, breaks) it sounds bad, it sounds just like noise.
i think its silly to compare the two music genres.:)

Jeez yshikllr, you are wrong in this thread on many different levels.

#1 - there is a great deal of classical music that is quite moving and stirring of the soul if you'd just give it a listen. It does require more patience, but to say the entire "genre" is w/o feeling is absurd.

#2 - System-J is not saying that classical is better than trance, you were saying that trance is better than classical, and assumed that since he discredited your opinion that he stood for classical being better than trance. No genre is simply "better" than another. Your comparison is like a five year olds.

#3 - I suggest you read some of System-J's numerous columns on trance music (you can find the link in his signitaure I believe) before you insult his intelligence like this again.

Is that the only argument you have against me? Because, you are still wrong either way. In fact, you're being a pseudo-intellectual yourself, by just posting this. And, you berating me makes you look less intelligent than you make yourself out to be since it's basically what almost all your posts do. ;)

Wow, everyone on here is a drone i think, putting classical over trance. Trance is the best kind of music there is, period. Classical, though technically impressive, is really boring, and if you say it isn't then you're probably a pseudo-intellectual liar. As technology improves, music gets better, there's just more stuff you can do with it. Classical is genius in that it did everything it could with the instruments available, but was still limited by a lack of technology.

woo, another self appointed arbiter to save the day! :gsmile:

"Trance is the best kind of music there is, period."
well by all means! share your amazing insight on how you came to such a wondeful conclusion! :gsmile:

"Classical, though technically impressive, is really boring, and if you say it isn't then you're probably a pseudo-intellectual liar."
what an amazingly objective statement - just like you said in a later post, you provided logical reasoning as to what makes trance better than classical :haha:

now let's take your last two lines a bit more seriously:

  • "As technology improves, music gets better, there's just more stuff you can do with it."
i'll give you the benefit of doubt on this one, supposing you meant "...music gets potentially better"

  • "Classical is genius in that it did everything it could with the instruments available, but was still limited by a lack of technology."
as opposed to trance, which (using the same barometer) isn't genius, because it never does everything it can with the instruments available.

see mr. intelligence? even on your own barometers i can prove classical is 'better' than trance.

thanks, come again, and better luck next time. :gsmile:

the day a trance producer uses as many elements as a full symphony orchestra and succeeds as creating a unified sound doing so, *maybe* you can make the comparison of the two, but as of today, now, the analogy is pretty insulting. and even then, synthetic instruments lack the acoustic imaging of a live orchestral peroformance, even recorded versions of it, which adds soooo much more to the experience.
