Variety reporter Rick Kissel suspects that focusing too much on bigger markets has hurt baseball overall.

"One thing that may be hurting baseball is that Fox and ESPN put so many of their eggs in the basket of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry. Maybe if they tried to capitalize on the stories elsewhere in the league, fans would be more invested in other teams."

more whining about the big market teams? For sake, enough already.

this isn't whining...I'm just presenting a possible reason why this WS went largely unwatched in the US (which I somewhat agree with) ;)

to quote one of my friends who is a Phillies fan:

"All ESPN is about nowadays with baseball coverage is YANKEES! RED SOX! CUBS! YANKEES! RED SOX! CUBS! YANKEES! RED SOX! CUBS! YANKEES! RED SOX! CUBS! YANKEES! RED SOX! CUBS! YANKEES! RED SOX! CUBS!...."

well maybe because it just wasn't that good of a world series. Seriously, last time there was a really GOOD World Series was 2002 and obviously the year before that was a great one in 2001 in terms of excitement value. 2003 was kinda meh (the ALCS was the highlight that year) and 2004 WS was a joke, as was last year's.

I thought for sure that Detroit-St. Louis would get a lot of people watching but in the end, aside from Kenny Rogers' pine tar debacle, the games weren't all that great. Also, maybe baseball just isn't as popular in the USA as it was a few decades ago....

I mean, there are a whole SLEW of reality (ING GARBAGE) television shows to watch now..... baseball just doesnt' stand up in comparison. You know, Deserpate Housewives and all that brilliant entertainment.

ok time for my morning coffee.

Just goes to show you.... the last two years... any TY old team can win the WS... which is NOT how it should be...

the BEST team should win...

Blue Jays could beat the redbirds in 5 games... all I'm saying...

And the 100+ loss Royals swept the American League champions in the final three games of the season.

How the hell would you plan on fixing what you speak of? Have the Yankees and the Mets (the two best records in each league this year) play an 11 game series and forget about every other team?

ummm... YES!!!

I'm just looking out for the league here... Cards beating the TIGERs for the World Series title.... can not be good for the game...

so... if everyone wants some random team winning it all... be ready for the league to go under....

White Sox now the Cardinals.... unreal.... MLB has let me down for the second straight year... Bud is a moron...

Not gonna lie, right now, I'm thinking:

East Coast > West Coast > Midwest

I'm that pissy about it all...

statistics bleh...you can't argue that with a die hard fan. its easy to spit out stats now but in 89 I was 8yrs old, oblivious to the stats and simply rooted for my team. you probably didn't gain interest in these statistical figures to argue the point at that age either, just goes to show you that looking up stats is a different approach than an die hard fan has towards his team.

did you even understand my post? or did you even see the word "research" and just rambled on something completly off topic? It's really obvious that you went for the latter.

as for looking up attendance figures, i looked that up to find evidence that shows you are wrong ;)

attendance for teams correlate with the regular season record for the most part. the yankees aren't an exception to this

dunno about you but not winning a world series is a low to me, ************ if they have a consistent winning season. i think what you are trying to say but don't want to is that yankees have had a longer history of fan support (which partly enables them to have their budget) compared to the 'pirates rockies royals'. you can't blame a city to inhabit any inner city influence (cheaper tickets) to help fill their stadiums and you can't blame NY for being over populated, it's the cost of entertaining in this big city.

where the did you get that from? you completely missed my point. you weren't even close. you pretty much tried to put your opinions in my mouth and i'm calling you out on it :p

my point was the pirates, royals, rockies etc would kill to have 6+ years of winning and have no WS ring to show for it.
