Maybe it could benefit from a remix. :clown:

Lump 8/10
10101 7/10
Idiot 8/10
Corduroy 6/10

Overall a decent album despite it not really being one. Wow, that made no sense. I think the tools featured could be handy for some live mashups and whatnot, and all the real tracks on here are leagues better than Sun Spots. I'd still classify them as minimal, however, well, the exception being Idiot. Whether Holden likes to admit it or not, he's producing the very same thing he belittled s few months ago. Welcome to the ketamine movement.

Initial thoughts on the album:

First of all, I love anything that sounds like Nintendo. This whole thing sounds a lot like Nintendo, so I like that... a lot. :toothless

Idiot: (9/10) Holden is definitely musically pretty brilliant - I don't know much about music theory in general beyond what's necessary for harmonic mixing, but the sounds in this tune are just lush as can be and Holden's sense of timing, is as always, unpredictable and interesting. This tune goes in a lot of different directions all at once - Excited to get my hands on this thing with the EFX unit live. The last build of this tune is massive, and I'm going to have a LOT of fun mixing the outro.

Corduroy: (7/10) Another really glitchy Nintendo tune, I like it on it's own, but I don't think I'll be using this one out all that much. It's a pleasant tune with interesting tones to it, and again, Holden's signature "lush" layering of elements that just sound like they were meant to be, but this one just doesn't really take me anywhere.

10101: (9/10) This is going to be opening material for me for sure. Love it - Very floaty and bouncy, definitely sounds like something that will be a lot of fun to mix harmonically, and I love the way it builds. Ambient noise is fun :)

Lump: (7/10) Probably my least favorite tune on the album, though I still thoroughly enjoy it, I think it's a tune I have to hear in the context of a set to enjoy because on it's own I just get moderately irritated by it. But it'll probably grow on me, much like plenty of other stuff I've initially been uncertain about.

All in all Holden did a pretty solid job - No "Sun Spots" on here :)

And I'm suprised no one has mentioned "Flute," great intro/mashup material!

Bout to bop this... love the art :p

Just listened to the samples on juno.

How long was this album in the making from conception to release? Someone give me a figure?

It is easily the biggest lot of e I've ever heard. James holden has totally lost the plot on this one I'm afraid, it has no redeeming quailities whatsoever.

That's because minimal is only for the 3LIT3. :clown:

Yes, I've listened to it a bunch of times. And leaving a track totally blank is just lame unless you're Brian Eno or some other musical genius...as someone else said this album is evidence holden has really went off the deep end. just my 2c :)

ok for the record and for everyone that has a pair of ears

Experimenting with music never hurt. You're bound to have your own opinion. For me trance is boring and totally monotonous, lacking imagination and creativity as a factor, fluffy, uplifting to the point where every production has the same bassline and rhythm.

Minimal has sounds from every spectrum and is more unpredictable than most genres out there these days. That is my opinion and my view on Holdens album is similar. It isn't predictable, he experimented with sound and when you all say he went to the deep end I honestly believe he went to the deep end for the better, he went and did something odd and different.

For some it wouldn't be considered a good different, I thought it was great. At first I thought it would be a crap album but after listening I totally thought otherwise.
