There are some people who use chemical substances in moderation, relatively safely... There also some people who use them in excess, as a crutch, out of psychological or chemical dependency.
Trouble is, virtually everyone who uses them thinks they're in the first category. The boundary of the second category is always a few inches away from their present state. |
ABSOLUTELY 100% CORRECT (bold added for emphasis).

For the people who are clubbing every week, it also doesn't help that they can almost always point to someone worse. There's some truth to the idea that clubbing/partying actually becomes a form of self-validation for many frequent rollers (though certainly not all). |
IMO - it boils down to standards and expectations. Standards and expectations for oneself (in all aspects of life) are influenced by many factors: family, self, friends, peers, etc.
One cannot discount the influence that friends/peers have on these standards and expectations. One's own standards and expectations usually end up mirroring that of one's peer group.

Nobody will be convinced by words alone; the crazy ones will only start making lifestyle changes once they hit rock bottom. |
It's sad to think - but the above fact is true for the vast majority of people.
Lasting change does not occur until a point of crisis is reached (a "Tipping Point" as Malcolm Gladwell called it in his book). The more significant the change required the more significant the crisis point ends up being.
Unfortunately when talking about drug (ab)use the change required (to stop) is massive and thus the point of crisis is equally as significant. |
