In Irreversible, which is a very sick movie. Where the woman is raped in the ass for a good 10 minutes and the guy is continually goading her and insulting her the whole time. It's horrible. I couldn't watch it and I study cinema in University and I see a lot of sick stuff in crazy European movies. In the same movie you see a guy's head, skull and then brain smashed into pieces by a fire extinguisher. It's horrible.
Also in Un Chien Andalou where in a totally iconic scene directed by Buneuel and Dali. The lady's eye is slit in two. That's really disturbing. |

+1
The only one I don't think I have seen is Irreversible. Oh and I still haven't seen American History X fully from front to back, I've just seen pieces here and there at random times. |

I don't watch horror/gruesome movies personally, so most of the things you guys have talked about I have no idea.
The only movie that sticks out in my mind as being a little too over the top for me, was Blood Diamond. I just saw that in theatre not long ago, and it seriously made me bawl my eyes out.
I think the scene where they are forcing the children to kill people, and then letting them take hits of heroin etc. is the most shocking thing I have seen, and probably the most heart wrenching.
It may have hit me harder because I know that it is based off of reality, and isn't just hollywood showiness.
Oh, and I am sure there is something else I have seen that rivals this, but it's the most fresh in my mind, (and I think I have tried to forget the other stuff). |

The most powerful sex scene I have ever seen is in Berlin, and it ranks as one of the most emotionally stirring moments in my movie career.
Also, the opening scene in Blood Diamond is heart wrenching as well. |

Yeah, those were all pretty shocking. I want to see Odishon again, though. That's the sort of horror I usually like: dramatic and well-paced, not all-out gore fest.
For pure gross-out, I've never seen anybody beat David Cronenberg. The last ten minutes or so of The Fly are pure nasty, like when Goldblum vomits boiling acid to dissolve that dude's hand and foot and Geena Davis rips off Goldblum's jaw and his body falls apart to reveal the huge fly creature. Bleh. Some of the scenes from The Thing are really nasty, too. And the classic scene from Alien when the guy starts having what looks like a seizure and the critter jumps out of his chest.
I think what gets me most are the emotional and situational contents of certain scenes more than the blood and guts, though. Like at the end of Casino, the idea of seeing your own brother being beaten to death while you can't do anything and then being beaten nearly to death yourself and buried alive. Even worse is that quite a few of the events in that film really happened similarly to how they're portrayed, including that scene: the autopsy of the Spilotro brothers ("Santoro" in the film) revealed sand in their lungs, indicating that they'd been buried alive after being beaten.
Some more:
- In Odishon, the guy is totally paralyzed while he's being tortured and his son ends up seeing at the end. Yuck.
- The part of The Beach when the guy gets his leg bitten off by a shark and once he starts getting infected everyone just leaves him all alone to suffer and die, "out of sight, out of mind" as the film says. It's not particularly "gross" but it is nasty in the more general sense of showing people doing really ed up things.
- Fargo, when everything goes wrong at the end and the one dude ends up grinding up his own partner in crime in the wood-chipper.
- Curb-biting scene from American History X.
- The opening D-day scene of Saving Private Ryan, especially the part when you see the soldier lying there with his guts hanging out and crying for his mom.
I'm going to start a new thread about something related to this... |
