i think this thread has made me realize i sleep too much... and if what you guys are saying about all those studies are true, it's no wonder i'm always feeling so exhausted.
i usually go to sleep sometime between 10pm and 12am, and i don't wake up until between 7:30am and 8am (i usually try to push it to the last minute since i hate waking up), which means i sleep about 8-10 hours per night. sometimes if i know i'm going to bed early, i'll set my alarm earlier, but i'm just so accustomed to sleeping until the last minute, waiting until i can't sleep anymore, then rushing to get ready and get to work on time.
but i also usually get woken up a few times per night. either by my cat or just by being uncomfortable, so i think that makes me feel like i'm never getting a full nights rest.
i probably need to totally re-adjust my sleep/wake schedule. :o |

not sure whether it's a comfort or security factor, but i can relate to your friend's situation. i'm sure my anxiety and depression play pretty big roles in my lack of sleep, as well... |
unfortunately she has both of those too! :( it has a lot to do with security for her though too. i think more so with that than anything else. shes always felt very secure with me which plays a role in everything. i HATE saying this but maybe seek some sort of medical help as it just gets worse because you arent getting enough sleep.

Part of it is from working out and drinking lots of water throughout the day. I dont get enough sodium from protein shakes and protein dehydrates you. Just trying to keep gatorade to 1 cup a night while youre sleeping isnt that bad :whip: I stand by that |
well in that case then its not very bad really. i just know that a lot of people drink it just cause it tastes good and they know its good for you when working out etc. but it can be bad for you cause of the sugars and salts but at the same time it does depend on your diet and exercise habits.

Insomnia in most cases is a mental problem, not a physical one. It's usually attributed to stress/anxiety/depression etc. The good thing about that is that it can be cured so it's not all that bad. You just have to be willing to cure it ;)
In rare cases it can be a genetic defect in which case I definitely feel for you. Then again, there is a rare genetic disorder which allows you to stay awake for months. Apparently those people do suffer for about an hour every night due to apparent pain in various body areas. |
yep! very very true.

i can definitely say that besides not doing a lot throughout the day, major depression led to sleep. Depression makes it hard to sleep, anxiety makes it hard to stay asleep. didnt know where I was going in life and always felt I needed to be doing something to fix that. RACING mind at night, ugh I hate to think about it. |
depression makes your metabolism slow down which makes you sleepy from the food you eat.

i go to bed at midnight and wake up at 620am. for me thats a great sleep pattern. i rarely have problems sleeping. its not too little so im not sleepy all the time but its not too much (8hrs is normally too much for me) to where i feel like sleeping more. i seriously cant sleep past 9am in general. when i do its rare or cause i went to bed way late. try it and see what happens.
remember. sleep is about quality not quantity. a solid 3hrs is better than a broken up 8hrs. |

| On days I have to work or go to school I'll manage with four, maybe five. My body has become accustomed to it and I can run just fine all day (even though I know it isn't that healthy to continually do that). If I have a day off, like tomorrow, I'll average about eleven. |

Ideally, 9 or 10 hours. I can operate fine on 7/8, but any less and I start getting drowsy or pissed off during the day, unless it's a one off thing. 9 or 10 is what I get if I fall asleep and don't have to wake myself up early for anything the next morning.
Back in highschool I used to only get anywhere between 4 and 6 per night, because I hated going to sleep early on school nights because I hated feeling like I was losing a bunch of my free time. Consequantially I spent a lot of time with my head down on the desk in class, which you can imagine didn't do wonders for my academic performance or thrill my teachers. |
