*cough* erm, what? You do realise what Sasha does with Ableton yes? Here is a hint: it's not using it to play two tracks in their whole without having to manually beatmatch. |
Actually, it is.
Among other things. |

We both know he plays many 'parts' of tracks to create something unique, also, I should have said 'he's not JUST using...' as i'm sure he can't get parts to every single track he wants to DJ with, so he'll be looping and sampling, some parts live, some parts pre-edited.
Either way, comparing Deadmau5 to Sasha as DJs, or as anything, is obserd if you know their histories. |

the post i replied to wasn't even concerning deadmau5, keep up kris ;)
i've taken to pre-matching alot of my tunes before burning them to CD as it means i worry less about beatmatching and can focus more on layering or creating interesting transitions. i wasn't condoning sasha for using ableton but merely saying that the above practice is in theory no worse |

Hmm, colour me sold school but pre-matching tunes for CD mixing is a bit, well, against one of the fundemental aspects of DJing. You might as well record your set before hand and then just play with effects over the transitions ;)
I jest of course but I find 'getting in to the groove' of mixing, the tension and constant listening to the phasing of the beats plus the tightness of the top end really brings the pleasure of pulling off a good mix. With that taken away, it would feel soul-less IMO. What Sasha does is bordering more on live-composition than DJing in my books.
Iso' are you still a trance jock these days? I'd love to hear some of your mixes if your layering tracks up live and see what your doing with these transitions. In all seriousness (and not trying to put you down), is it anything an experienced Vinyl / CD DJ couldn't do? |

you could argue that but it's only taking a small bit of the work away really, there's still phrasematching, timing & EQing to focus on.. and obviously on-the-fly tune selection (which i can take more time over now; sometimes taking an extra minute to pick the right tune makes all the difference)

i've yet to attempt a proper recorded mix featuring such techniques as of yet but plan on it eventually; up until i've just been mucking around.. and tbh there's only so much you can do with only 2 cdjs. and to answer your question honestly i'd say no, i've seen DJs that beatmatch on the fly & pull off far more advanced stuff than i'm capable of. if you ever get the chance, search the dj subforum for mixes by stu cox & you'll see the kind of sound i'm aiming for :)
it's just that in this day & age, the abilty to beatmatch is pretty much a given assumption & doesn't impress that many people anymore, and seeing as i learned the hard way on vinyl i just thought it, may as well save myself some bother and focus on making my mixes more interesting! |
