AMEN BROTHER. But just give up arguing, it's pointless...I gave up after calling it basically an OPINION and he disagreed although a definition of theory can be "an emphasis of opinion" or as I remember learning in school, it can also be described as "credible opinion" ... but again, found it pointless to even keep going ...

quote:
Music theory is the field of study that deals with the mechanics of music and how music works. It often involves identifying patterns that govern composers' techniques. In a more general sense, music theory also often distills and analyzes the elements of music – rhythm, harmony (harmonic function), melody, structure, form, and texture. Broadly, theory may include any statement, belief, or conception of or about music (Boretz, 1995). People who study these properties are known as music theorists.

My definition of music theory in this thread has been in line with the wiki definition. No Surprise.

But in the end all theory is OPINION. Music Theory is just an area people study and FORM AN OPINION ABOUT HABITS in people's interest in music

And since you are refering to wikipedia, right in the first paragraph of the Music Theory page...

"Broadly, theory may include any statement, belief, or conception of or about music (Boretz, 1995). People who study these properties are known as music theorists."

BELIEF...CONCEPTION....in other words, OPINION. It's just an opinion conceived after studying things...but for most producers out there, they don't really even do a lot of studying. Heck, a lot of the young producers you see that are making tracks and doing well haven't even stepped into a real club because they aren't old enough yet. They just know what makes them move and go with that.

It's all opinion. There just happens of field of study out there dedicated to forming theories (credible OPINIONS) on music.

But in the end, a lot of people who produce and DJ don't know about the studies that are done to form these theories and don't sit there and think about it day and night...they just learn the software and hardware and go at it and their body tells them when that beat is just right. Maybe you do...but I guarantee you if we polled all the major producers in this world, only a small percentage would have any clue as to what music theory is even all about.

It's opinion dude. It's opinion. Get it? It's opinion. It's just opinions formed after studying things and not as a jerk reaction.

I give up (again). I'm bad at explaining my argument, lol.

I have to give props to any 17 year old that can make such popular tunes, churn them out at an insane rate, land tons of remix contracts, tour the world, and get respect from the more established djs in such a short amount of time. that being said, his music is, and never will be, my cup of tea. personally, i think its the lowest common denominator of dance music, and if some people like that, cool, but don't tell me he's even CLOSE to pioneering anything.

I thought he was 20-something.

Either way, I'm entirely too tired of house-by-presets.

Here we go with another "teh EDM theory bible doesnt exists, therefore EDM music theory no exists."

To practice it you have to conceptualize it, how do you practice something that requires crafting music a user can interface with in a way you want them to without conceptualising it first? It requires music theory. And the next stage of this thread will go into semantics...joy.

Your probably familiar with Burial - Archangel, since its the most maintstream track off the Untrue album, how do you think Burial came up with the music he produced for that track and if you've heard the album...the entire album. By simply practicing?

ps: i never said every aritst subconciously taps into edm music theory, i specifically said the talented artists and the ones that make great music do. Not every producer knows edm music theory, only a small percentage do, and they are the ones you probably champion the most, without knowing they "practice" edm theory when they produce their music.

Dude, there is no such thing as "EDM Music Theory", there is ONE music theory (well ,at least i'm talking about the western music theory, i don't know about arabian, indian systems and stuff) and EDM producers, like all musicians in the ing planet, use it to make music....(although this is very controversial about EDM producers since the only thing one should know about is how to use reason or cu-base...)
