...

The way you write it - It seems so boxed in, and cerebral. Don't you ever get the urge to explore?

Drugs
Experimentation
Hurt
Sex
Pretending
Inebriation
Exploration
Depression
Excitation
Naivety
More sex?

All things to cover up the things we cannot possibly know without experience. What more to youth is there than [hopefully] a purging of innocence and ignorance? I am 21 and have had my fair share of traveling and experiences - but there is still a lot I would like to experience, despite my recognition of the fact that not all experiences are additive, and that some could be negative to me to the point of regression or further ignorance so far as my perspective is concerned. I know enough people to know that our past can scar us to the point that our future is uncertain and the present unsettlingly rocky. It's not that aging excludes one from the things I have listed... it's more that aging sure seems to detract from the expectation of exultation in the process and the lessons wrought by such experiences. Perhaps I am a bit cerebral about things, but that is just the way I am now and will probably come to be in the future as I acquire even more experiences. I am by no means 'boxed in' by my observations though - so far as I am concerned at least. :p

I think it just has to do with the fact that I'm graduating next year, and then, its the real world. Now I'm looking back at high school and I feel like I "wasted" some of that time. I put quotes around that because of course I didn't actually waste it, but I just feel there were things I could have done that I didnt do.

This is exactly what I feel, the only difference is that I'm graduating in 3 or 4 months.

Oh, bollocks to that.

I'm 28. Sure, I occasionally 'miss my youth' but I think that's rubbish. Every year, since I was 17 (when I gained my freedom, leaving home), things have gotten better. Sure there is some stuff in there that I would describe as 'really crap' or 'particularly ing average' (possible Australianism) - But it's all good.

I wouldn't trade my experiences for anything. They all give me a better way of conducting my life, so I don't things up like I have in the past.

It's all good people!

/pep talk for all you old decrepit bastards. :p

When I turned 27, I came home from studying abroad after a year. It was the best experience of my life. I lived in a small German town and got scholarship money per month for my rent etc. The money I did save up before I left was used for travelling around Europe on the weekends. It was great- I had a small room, lots of pot and not many classes to go to... :toothless

Then I came home, finished my 2nd degree and realised I had to grow up. At that time I had been working as a waitress in a nice place earning lots of money and saving it and taking off about 2-3 months a year to travel. The job was so dead-end and I wanted something more challenging. I met someone, who is Australian and now my husband, in Germany, so I decided to go do my MA in Sydney. Got engaged and got married and I now live here; was in NY before.

I am not saying my life is not fun anymore- it is. I just have a new phase to get used to. I have responsibilities now. But I do remember the GREAT times when I was younger. No responsibility and going out getting drunk, staying out all night, travelling all over the place etc. It was the best time and now I just can't do all that now to such an extent as I did in the past.

I miss the sense of possibility I felt when I graduated high school. Even if it was only an imagined one.

Now five years have passed and I've realized that I'm going to have to get a job I hate just like most people. I kind of wish that my parents had forced me to work when I was in high school. I think that "adjustment" to the realities of bosses and crap jobs would be a bit easier if I had started working earlier.

Ugh. :clown:

when i graduated high school, the following month i spent in germany as part of an exchange program (i had a kid living w/ me in april while i was still in school, then went to germany in july). for nearly a month straight all i did was live the most relaxed/comforting/non-chalant time of my entire life. never since then have i ever felt completely relaxed. it was amazing. i love europe

Having experienced that in high school, that is exactly what motivates me to stay in school for another 10 years and be my own boss.

"Growing up" is basically realizing that you're not as interesting or exceptional as you probably thought you were when you were younger.
