Ehhh... Not exactly a good deal. Bay isn't the caliber of hitter that Manny is. Even now. |

There was no question that Theo had to move Manny. Everyone knew that the allegations of a player not performing on the field because he was unhappy with management is a nightmare for any team. So Manny being Manny went to a another level. Essentially, Theo was in damage control mode.
The only question was how much did he have to pay to make this problem go away, and as usual, he did the right thing in turning to a fairly incompetent GM in Ned Colletti to assist him. Once again, Colletti, who is well known for his assistance in destroying the Giants farm system, tries to go out and make a big deal before the deadline . Andruw Jones, Andre Ethier, Juan Pierre, Matt Kemp, and now Manny Ramirez are all Dodger OF's. That's not smart, and it just emphasizes the terrible deals Colletti gave to Pierre and Jones while he had two young talents in Kemp and Ethier waiting.
Yes, they shipped out one of the games best hitters of all time but the facts are he's unmotivated, selfish, getting old and is a liabiltiy to his teammates. There was no way management was going to renew his option so it only made sense to get rid of this cancer now. You don't pay someone for past performances and Manny is not nearly the threat he was in his prime. It sucks to see the guy go but Theo did what was best for the team.
So yes, the Red Sox did unload Manny...and as a team, they now have a chance to win again here in 2008. That wasn't going to happen with Ramirez on the club. They got Bay, and he'll help. He wont protect Ortiz though like Ramirez did. It wont be the same but Bay will abuse the Green monster.
Time to close the books on the Manny chapter and I hope that one day, he can sort out his indifferences and enter the HOF as a member of the Redsox. |
how about trying to make manny happy? bay isn't even on the same level as manny; and giving up three players and money to acquire bay has to be one of the most uneven trades in recent memory. sox got hosed, and theo made a huge mistep here. |

come on Jerz, that's ridiculous. Manny was a distraction in the clubhouse, a lot of the players are just about done with him. You just don't know what to expect from Manny the last two months. This is getting out of hand and he would have dogged it the rest of the way.
Keep Manny happy? What else do they need to do? Give him BJs in the dugout between innings? He literally did whatever he wanted, got paid top dollar and got away with all his ridiculous antics. Did you happen to see the Angel series? His presence clearly effected the team.
Hansen is talented but he needs a change of scenery. Moss is another Dave Murphy, nowhere to put him. Yes, Theo dropped the ball on that because he could have used Moss to get Grabow.
Manny was in no better position than being in Boston. The guy is an icon amongst the Boston fans. What more does he want? As a GM, you do what's best for your team, not any one individual. Manny had to go... |
i don't disagree that it's about the team, and i have no idea why manny wasn't happy; however, i can't imagine that after eight years in boston manny explicitly called for a trade now without reasons. something must have been going on that we don't know about. it's not always the player that is bad.
as a yankees fan, i don't like manny and i am glad to see him go, however, this was not a good move. |

I would say so....he's been so damn consistent and pitching very well.
it looks like it's going to be a tough day tomorrow though with sabathia starting against guzman. looks like Milwaukee should win tomorrow. |

Fixed. Time to put Heilman and Schoeneweis on waivers. |

Nah... 'cause even with the terrible bullpen, if Wagner never got hurt, the Mets likely would've won the division. Even if Wagner got hurt a week later than he did, they probably would've got the wild card.
But for some reason, the year feels worse than last. I haven't even gone on any Mets or sports related websites... |

So in the past month we've dropped $423.5 million. All i know is if they don't win the World Series this year, Girardi is gone. I'm fine with paying the players over $20 million a year, i just don't like the 8-year contracts. Cuz in 4 years from now, they won't be what they are today. We could end up with another Pavano and Giambi. O well, here's hoping championship #27 comes sooner than later.
Everyone else feel free to discuss..... |

Giambi was 3 years older than Tex when he came to the Yanks and a huge steroids abuser. This caused his body to break down very very quickly, on top of all the internal issues that came from his steroid use(tumor). Tex has been raking since day 1 and has never been suspected of taking roids. I don't see him breaking down - and an 8 year deal is what it took to get him. I'm fine w/ that.
I think the Yanks majorly overpaid for Sabathia, but oh well - it's not my money. He is entering his prime time years as a 28 year old - as is Tex. I think both of these players best years are ahead of them and I don't remember anytime 2 players joined the Yanks in the beginning stages of their prime. I think Burnett is a moderate injury risk, but I can live w/ having him around. |
