the one i bought looks like this

and the wires are blue and black(instead of the typical). stupid dell. ill be traveling back to the sweaty nerd store to try and exchange. they have a load of old dell parts, it might just be on the 2 dollar rack...which could be good, could be bad(dead) or could be exactly the same and just as loud

what it sounds like is you have an ATX 2.0 PSU that you bought, and the original is ATX 1.0. the connectors are fine. ATX 2.0 fits ATX 1.0. its just got extra pins that hang off. thats fine. dont worry.

does it look like this:

i cant get a pic as my power supply is being used right now, and the other is in the car. this thread has the most info ive found, but no real pics.
i will know what it looks like if my computer store has it, but it may be a pain dealing with the nerds...
one question tho, i know i cannot support larger HD, but can i support more than 2 smaller ones? i have a 10gb oem, 40gb deskstar but the primary IDE only has 2 connectors, can i get a cable with more or is it limited? i yanked my floppy drive because that thing is useless, but i think thats a secondary IDE...?
now i get to pull my computer apart again, yea! |

i was meaning the power plug on your board. you can tell if its one of those two i said above pretty quickly. if its the modular one with 20 pins, then you are fine and no worries. just take the one you had and install it. it will work.
and for the HD your info is a little skewed. you CAN get a new hd, but because 132gb is the largest you can get without that overlay driver, which none come with anymore, is something of which i wouldn't recommend. there are many HDs that can be had off ebay or craigslist that are much larger than the drive you probably have in there. also, for every 1 ide connector on the board, you may have a max of 2 drives per cable. you will NEVER find a cable with more. |

hey yah, i talked to the nerd at the computer store and he explained the ide controller deal. im not really interested in that, but if i could transfer my C drive stuff onto something bigger than 9 gigs that could be useful...i still have credit left there so i might attempt that after everything else.
however...i took back the prev psu and they didnt have a 24-30 dollar model they could try and sell me. BUT they did have a useless junk rack marked 1-3 dollars. lo and behold but a newer dell 230w psu with the exact cables was on the 3 dollar shelf. maximum score. its not a ton quieter but its better and everything worked smoothly. now i just gotta wait on my cpu and mem stuff to arrive

ahh cool!
on the hd thing. want to know the easiest thing? run the 9gig as a slave, install the 40gb as your primary, reinstall win2k on it when you get the new cpu and memory, and just access what you need as necessary on the 9gb. and just delete the windows directory as it has nothing useful but takes up space. its easy, and you dont lose anything. |
