"less complex"? umm, how about totally unforgiving if you make any mistakes.

Kinda hard to make a mistake when there's nothing there to begin with.

Seriously, some of what's labeled "minimal" is alright, but quite frankly, there's about 10 minutes of production effort that goes into most of it. All music is unforgiving if you make any mistakes. It's not hard to hear a tuning problem or a melody in the wrong key, even for people without a formal musical education.

And no, minimal music is not about layering either, it's primarily about a lack of layering that the other genres do.

God, I can't believe how ing pretentious some people manage to sound when they're talking about the latest flavour-of-the-month music that they only listen to because everyone else does.

YES! very true.. i know a few of the local minimal techno dj's in toronto and ive seen how they produce their tracks / remixes... takes a LOT of time to get it right . oh.. i think its the best music MIXING wise... how pretty much any track will mix well with another... as long as its not the totally opposite key... in which case it sometimes sounds cool with all the glitchy sounds in there anyways! :P

So who's got some good minimal sets I could download?

Honestly.. listen to this... its my buddy phil.. but these mixes are SOO well done.. he works on it for hours. adding in his own random to make it always original! they may start up a lil slow... i find it awesome to listen to this when im driving somewhere farther then just locally:)

Just Phil - Groove in a vial

Just Phil - Dark Green Matter

He's playing in the acid lounge on saturday if you really get into it ;)

I've tried so hard many times to like minimal, given it so many chances, and one time I tried so bad that I just had to stop cause I nearly got bored to tears!

I disagree as well... trance is more about layering.
Minimal is all about the small little intricate sounds.
That's what I like about Emissions. It's a sound I never heard before, like the air gun sound used sparatically, and I think that's what minimal is about, using new unique sounds, and that's why I think about producing that kind of stuff, it's so intricate. Everything has to be JUST RIGHT!

How did you extrapolate that from what I said? That's precisely the attitude that starts these ridiculous fads in the first place.

It's an issue of people justifying their borrowed tastes with specious reasoning after the fact, rather than bothering to think for themselves. It has only tangentially to do with how popular or unpopular the content in question is.

For the record, I didn't find the first post (Mortyman's) to be really pretentious. Just some of the replies.
