I find this funny. I think that's a horrible track that does no justice to the genre.

No. Cool people only talk about how cool a genre is. |

I disagree as well... trance is more about layering.
Minimal is all about the small little intricate sounds.
That's what I like about Emissions. It's a sound I never heard before, like the air gun sound used sparatically, and I think that's what minimal is about, using new unique sounds, and that's why I think about producing that kind of stuff, it's so intricate. Everything has to be JUST RIGHT! |
When I think of layering and minimal, I think it's more so the layering of different tracks.
While trance music is very dense and many layers within the 'production' of it. Minimal has very few layers within the actual track - but when you start mixing it into sets and layering tracks / elements from tracks onto each other, is when it gets interesting.
ie: Jeff Milligan on 4 decks, or DE9: Transitions where you have up to 8 tracks layered at once.
It's really easy to make boring minimal, but fairly hard to make good minimal. The problem with the current minimal bandwagon, is everyone and their brother is jumping on and puttign out boring minimal, flooding the genre with loads of crap.
That being said - these days there seems to be a huge overlap between - house/techno/minimal/prog/minimal techno/minimal house/deep/etc/etc. |

So who's got some good minimal sets I could download? |
Ahhh, Kris, welcome to the dark side... lol
Download John Gaiser available in the techno time thread.
His chuggy, dark baselines and sparatic WTF sounds generate a minimal collaboration that I highly appreciate.
It may be a little much of a transition for you, as it does not contain any trance influence. IMO this is the definition of proper minimal.
Dark, dirty, chuggy and full of spontaneous combustion ;)
give it a listen. enjoy. |

For once, I disagree with one of your posts. I  at this. |
Think what you like. I know firsthand what goes into it. I'm not even expressing an opinion here, I'm stating a fact. If the producers stick to presets and samples (which most do), then throwing the sequence together takes about 15 minutes. If they make all their own sounds, it might take an hour or two for a track. |
