Imagine a thread where the guy is asking to recommend him some good trance and people reply something like: hmm tiesto, pvd, above and beyond, blank and jones.(does not mean its bad music or anything, but often tells much about the scope of ppl giving out recommendations)

Now draw a parallel between the example and this thread.

I'll say that the genre referred to as "minimal techno" is slightly different because it has a specific purpose. The tracks on their own are still basically , but they're not supposed to be interesting, they're supposed to be idling-bus simplistic so a good DJ can screw around with 3 or 4 turntables and a metric assload of effects and modulations. That can be a lot of fun, if done properly, which it rarely is.

However, you only see that kind of show from a handful of "elite" techno DJs. There's absolutely nothing more boring than listening to a DJ try to spin minimal tracks like a normal house or techno set. The tracks themselves are boring. It only gets interesting when there's so much going on simultaneously that the DJ is essentially producing new tracks using bits and pieces of the existing ones.

This negates nothing I've previously said; the tracks are still thrown together with a minimum of effort and thought.

Ok so if you need 3 or 4 tracks to make one sound good, does that not defy the whole purpose of minimal? 3 or 4 songs layered to make on track sound good... suddenly it's not so minimal anymore or am I just not getting it?

As I always mention in these minimal threads, what most people call minimal these days isn't actually minimal at all. It's usually tech house or sometimes techno. In fact, there are very few DJs that play more than a couple of minimal tracks in an entire set.

Jon Gaiser is a good example of a DJ that plays minimal.

Gui Boratto, Pig and Dan and Stephan Bodzin may play a couple of minimal tracks, but I wouldn't classify these guys as minimal DJs at all.

I find that when it comes to "minimal" - I tend to prefer Live PA's over DJ sets. Misc, Niedeflur, Seph, Tractile, Sleeparchive, etc. Most "minimal" DJ sets that I download just are not very well done - there are exceptions, and when it's done well it's great.

For DJ sets, I seem to be leaning towards stuff that has a broader range of genres / styles where they throw in minimal tracks here and there. The overall 'aesthetic' of the sets are a bit more on the minimal side - not hard/banging stuff. I think Ricardo is a good example - some house (old and new), some techno, some minimal, he goes all over and takes you on a trip.

When I last saw him in Montreal, there were parts of the set where I was dancing the most/hardest I've danced in a long time. Then, there were parts of his set where I was just sitting down and spacing out to the music - still enjoying it just as much as when I was dancing, but just in a different way.

I'm also really enjoying sets by Pedro, Raresh, Rhadoo - they all seem to have their roots more so in house music - but will go on minimal-glitchy tangents, throw in a techno track or two and pull it off in a way thats fun and it works.

Then you have DJ's like Shonky who seem to be a bit more techno/minimal techno oriented, but also throw in minimal tracks, house, prog and at times almost getting onto a circuit-tribal like tangent then bringing it back to minimal/techno territory.

i like minimal. but is it really still a fad? its so old now.
kaniz
it's a fad the same way electro was a fad.

- genre that's been around for ages, hits a period of mainstream popularity before fading back out again.
