Sure, and the outcome for that is usually:

It's really easy to make boring minimal.

There's a huge difference in quality for the gems, and it shows.

My problem only lies with the Siskel and Ebert explanations some people dream up afterwards and feel that they need to share with the whole world.

Kinda hard to make a mistake when there's nothing there to begin with.

Seriously, some of what's labeled "minimal" is alright, but quite frankly, there's about 10 minutes of production effort that goes into most of it. All music is unforgiving if you make any mistakes. It's not hard to hear a tuning problem or a melody in the wrong key, even for people without a formal musical education.

And no, minimal music is not about layering either, it's primarily about a lack of layering that the other genres do.

God, I can't believe how ing pretentious some people manage to sound when they're talking about the latest flavour-of-the-month music that they only listen to because everyone else does.

Totally agree with you. It's like some people thought... "What genre can we create next, because everything else has been done. I KNOW, lets take all the good stuff away and call it minimal" ha ha what a joke..

I find it plinky, plonky and boring as hell. I may as well hit some spoons against a few pots and pans... I thought I was the only person bored less by this stuff. Thank God.

I find minimal is the opposite for me - strip away all of the crappy/un-needed stuff and just take the good elements.

and umm, minimal has been around forever - it's not a new genre. Its resurgence of popularity is new, but the genre itself is not.

ok since when? It's a new concept to me and I was listening to Chicago House and good old techno classics like Energy Flash back in the day... (not that I'm old or anything..)

Curious.

Is minimal techno by nature always slower than 130bpm, or are there minimal that's faster than that?

I'm listening to a Felix Krocher set right now, and there was this Super Mario Bros theme remix and essentially, it could be minimal in definition because all it had was a bass kick, a bit of high hats and the super mario theme (yay to old school bleepy sound!). Not the most complex tune structure wise
