because from what I've read, you can't buy a phone from Apple Period.
You can only buy them from Rogers & Fido. If you click on 'where to buy' on the iPhone Canada 3G page, it only shows Rogers & Fido.
Even if you are able to buy it from Apple, you are still required to get a 3-year plan.
If you look on the US apple website, it shows that you have to sign a 2-year contract with AT&T to get the iPhone 3G.
Doesn't appear that there is a way around this right now.

Thanks for the info! I figured so much... just funny how they get you here no matter what and we just take it in the a**! |

Thats how we like it up here! lol
But from a business point of view, it's a great job on Rogers Part. Who doesn't want an iPhone? Especially for $199.99.
Getting customers to lock into long term voice and data plans with high ECF & DECF fees is great! Especially when there is talk of more competition coming into the market in the next little while. Why not try and lock in customers now.
Oh, and when they do sign up, force them to get a Data & Voice plan of a minimum $65/month ($35 Voice Plan + $30 data Plan).
That's over $80 to the consumer, and that is before any additional add-ons .
Companies will be making a fortune with the iPhone (as will Apple)

Likely not actually.
Their marketing strategy is to get sales into the millions. This may happen, but will be much less than anticipated. This is because people are not willing to get into a 2yr or 3yr plan where they are paying 6 iphones per year, for voice and data. Apart from that, the secondary market will be very weak, the secondary market being the unlocked phone market, which causes considerable demand in other consumer phones, ie Nokias and BBs.
Their profits will also be low since their profit margin is very low. On a $199 phone, it will like be $40~50. |

But is it really so bad if you plan on staying with Rogers anyway???
I HAVE to use Rogers cable...The building is set up like that...
So that's tv and internet handled...I stay with rogers wireless and I get a big discount for my bundled services...
I've been with this company since the Cantel AT&T days and don't plan on going with any other services...
Same different pile anyway with other providers...
Only question is....Will I be happy with the iPhone???????? |

Well, they won't block the ESN since ESN's are primarily used for CDMA phones (Bell/Telus aka Non-Sim Card Phones).
Roger and Fido, which use SIM cards, have IMEI (which is the same thing) and currently do block non Rogers IMEI phones from using certain features.
Currently, they do not allow non Rogers IMEI phones use the Unlimited Mobile Browser for $7.
But yeah, expect that to be the case!
|
my bad i meant to say IMEI as opposed to ESN. Anyhow, i won't be surprised to see it that way especially if they want to control the distribution of the phones. Another anti-consumer choice measure to the long list.
