Maybe I just don't get it.
So you're not really hearing any of these tracks, just small bits and pieces of them all fused together via ableton. Basically he turned parts of each track into a DJ tool and then mixed all the little tools together to form a mix.
Yeah cool, it can be "pulled off", but what the is the point?
Some of those songs are really really nice in full... :rolleyes: |

again, i think if he did it a bit more creatively and coherently it could've been great. some mixes are phrased tily (the little mini-mix where he loops the breakdown of cobblestone jazz "w" comes to mind) and overall both discs don't feel right.
i think he might've tried to do too much and it failed.
edit:
yeah, disc 1 is decent, or at least, it has more solid moments than disc 2. though i love the mashup of track 3 on disc 2.

| I pretty much agree, I just don't dig either disc. I respect him attempting something new, but I'd rather hear something more traditional than this. |

| Waiting for the Magazines and the review sites like Resident Advisor to chime in. I have a feeling im going to disagree with them, then again I usually always disagree with RA's ty reviews. |

In this instance, I feel that technology is more of a hindrance than beneficial. I'd much rather put up with raw segues and hear great individual tracks - like the first installment of I-F's 'Bootleg' mix; the second one is due tomorrow, time permitting. Maybe it's because I feel that in Voorn's mix, the role of the producer has been diminished, that he/she has been relegated to the status of humble loop creator for Voorn to manipulate and that the underlying maxim of 'let the music play' has been forgotten. That's not to suggest that using technology is detrimental to making a great mix - listen to any of the online sets from Surgeon and Rob Hall for proof that this is as often not the case - but when a selector decides to highlight the clever-clever aspects of digital technology instead of the inherent quality of the music itself, that's when I switch off. |

This is a bit akin to saying that producers shouldn't sample, albeit on a different scale. I don't really see a problem with taking bits of tracks/sound and making other tracks with them... this whole dance music thing (as we know it) wouldn't really exist today without that concept, and I don't see why that concept shouldn't be allowed to carry over into mixes.
Bear in mind that I haven't listened to enough of this particular release to fairly judge how it sounds, yet. I just have no problem with it as a concept.
(I'm not trying to point you out specifically, Clovis, or say that you should like this particular mix. Though, I am responding to the "what the is the point?" part. :) ) |
