You hit the nail on the head, BTW... these people who claim to be Christians and spew hatred or intolerance are simply ignorant of their own faith... Jesus was all about love and inclusiveness. Ultimately, from the Christian perspective homosexuality is not something that God intended and is not the preferred way for humans to live; however, homosexuals should be loved and accepted just as much as any other person. You don't show love for someone by calling them a fag, telling them they're not as worthy of love as you are, and that they will suffer eternal punishment in hell (also not something that anyone who understands Christianity would ever believe).

I knew they were ignorant, as I was ALWAYS taught as a kid to love they neighbor as thyself and that being judgmental was one of the worst sins you could commit, aside from murder. I just never had anything or any way to back it up. If you wouldn't mind--when you have time of course-- finding that story that does talk about being accepting unconditionally being a higher law than any laws in leviticus that would be great. I am going to spam it to a friend of mine who is super intolerant.

Mark 12: 28-34
28One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?"
29"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.[e]
30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'[f]
31The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[g]There is no commandment greater than these."

32"Well said, teacher," the man replied. "You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him.
33To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."

34When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.

Well, the idea that for so many centuries the great majority of Christians who refused to tolerate homosexuality were simply ignorant of their own faith is pleasant, at least.

Sadly, the great majority of any faith community are ignorant of the finer points of their own faith. Far too many people accept what they are told by faith leaders as absolute without ever seeking other opinions, reading the actual texts, and/or understanding the context in which the scripture was written. The problem with this is that all men have bias, even the most pious; subsequently, you can never obtain an true understanding if you only seek out the opinion of one flawed person... to reach the truth one must listen to all voices. Additionally, confirmation bias is rampant in all societies (faith communities are no different)... people have a belief so they seek out only that information that supports their position. The story of Sodom is a prime example of this... the sodomites were destroyed for a whole host of reasons; however, those who are bigoted against homosexuals will focus almost exclusively on that one. The quote from Romans discussed earlier is an even better example... the person who used it in support of banning same-sex marriage looked at the verse is total isolation to the rest of the letter... by doing that it made that verse appear to be in support of his position; however, looking at the whole chapter it is clear that St. Paul was not condemning homosexuals... or anyone for that matter.

The whole country lurches forward into liberal-secular-humanist-communist-defeatism, you mean! While California tries desperately to preserve valuable traditions.
