not quite ivy league, but pretty close.

your contempt (or jealousy) seriously missed the point. i'll lay it out for you though. if a harvard educated person is getting fired, and that harvard educated person is much more highly sought after than you, then you will have a difficult time competing with that harvard educated person for the desirable jobs still vacant. although, from your post i doubt you will be applying for the same positions. ivy leaguers don't apply to TGI fridays too regularly.

I'm ing sorry for snobbery, but if a harvard-educated person gets a 17k annual bonus, he didn't make it too far away from TGI fridays.

hooray for leveragedsellout.com!

base salary is the largest component of the compensation structure in the industry I'm talking about. 160k-300k base salary with 17K-40k bonuses (which is about half of the normal amount)

bonuses in PE firms have to be way down this year. deals simply aren't being made. there hasn't been a big LBO in a while. the last large LBO I can remember was made in Q4 of 07.

All the big investment banks have reduced their bonuses at least by 50%. That's a really big deal when the base salary is below 100K.

fair enough, except in bulge bracket IB (well, there is no such thing any more, but still) bonuses are usually 100-300% of base. last year goldman's average associate bonus was 600k

regardless, people like you and I (well-offish) are very lucky to have what we have in this economy, and i don't think quirky comments about tgi are appropriate. that's all:)

cheers and merry x-mas.

that 600K number represents total comp, not bonus (and it is a highly skewed mean salary number that includes multimillions for top bankers and executives). An average associate likely takes home around 200K - 300K (base + bonus). this year the bonus portion of comp was down 50% for most, and the average associate compensation (base + bonus) is something in the range of 250-350K. I think the base salary portion of compensation for most associates hovers around 90K-100K. However, all of that is contingent on the banker not being one of the 200K finance industry employees cut from payrolls. i don't think bankers will be making money like they did last year for another 5-10 years. there will be a general discontent with the salaries of the past year, but since people have very short memories, those salaries will be back relatively shortly. after all, one of the hardest jobs in the world is to convince people to give you their money, and that's essentially what bankers do (in enormous amounts).

merry christmas

yeah being in a social situation with people who might possibly useful to furthering your career is a bad idea because you would not even pay that to get into a club.
