Are you old enough to remember and listen to rock music in the 1980s? Did you live in the US in the 1980s? If not please exit the thread because GnR is not a band of your generation so how are you going to comment? I never said being older is better dumb. What I said is if you are not old enough to remember the 1980s you can't understand the significance of GnR. If you ask someone who grew up in the 1970s what was the greatest band of their generation you think they are gonna say GnR? No, they are gonna say one of those 70s rock bands. Just like all the people in this thread who grew up in the 90s are not gonna say GnR either. If you weren't old enough to listen to their music at the time they were popular you won't understand why someone who was would call them the greatest rock band of their generation.
Does that concept make sense to you simpleton? :gsmile:
More Failure by this amazing fail-candidate!
1) Significant Rock bands are the famous ones
2) You can't understand the significance of something if you don't "live the thing" (80s...United States...i wander what was the most significant band in Europe then...)
3)70s rock bands are (cough, Pink Floyd, cough, Led Zep, cough, King Crimson...70s progressive rock revolution cough, cough , cough)
4)I was born in 1981 but i guess i'm not old enough to contribute to this thread.
5)You have knowledge of rock music
6)You always read all previous posts before you post
6)Taking lots of drugs (e.g. XanaX with ecstasy)improves your intellect

Heavy drug abuse, especially H and coke - check
Songs about drug and alcohol abuse - check
Songs filled with cursewords - check
ing lots of hot chicks - check
Band always on the edge of breaking up - check
Most band members were alcoholics - check
Long hair/I'm a badass style - check
Band shows up late for gigs/trashes the stage - check
Parents absolutely hate them and every song they recorded - check
Frontman is crazy, drug abusing, foul mouthed, and always involved in some kind of controversy - check
So out of control you make Motley Crue look like upstanding citizens - check
So, basically you're saying that the reason they were the "greatest" band has absolutely nothing to do with their music and everything to do with their "badass" image?

god damn you are a thick . let me keep this simple for you:
You were 6 years old when Appetite came out, I'm going to guess you didn't listen to it or other hard rock bands at the time. Therefore you may have trouble understanding the significance of GnR to those of us who did.

i didn't say that. are you saying that image plays no part in what makes a band "great"?

Nah. But I did find it interesting that of all the reasons you offered for their "greatness," only two of them touch on musical issues ("songs filled with curse words" and "songs about drug abuse"). I tend to think there's a bit of a distinction between writing great music -- the main component of being a "great band," IMO -- and giving kids a "badass" image to help them shore up their self-esteem. Although certainly doing the latter effectively can make a band quite popular and "significant" in a way to any impressionable teens and pre-teens who hear them.

meaning, in addition to their musical talent they also had all the "image" related attributes that a teenager in 1987 was looking for in a rock band

Man, i can totally see some guy in a music forum after 20 years or so commenting about the "significance of Armin in EDM during the 00s" stuff like:
"What!? OMG Armin was the most significant person in EDM during the 00s, he was everything a kid was looking for in the 00s...!he was playing big unicorn music and was making the jesus pose all the time u know!! Kids would go so mad when he was doing the jesus pose...OMG they would scream and reach for the lazers...! he was filling stadiums and big raves and thats why he got nominated as the best DJ of the time in DJ-Mag!!! We all loved Armin back then!!! You say that Orbital were more significant!? Who the cares about Orbital, no-one knew them!!"
