I don't know what dimension you live in because all three came up at about the same time and yes I see a lot of Nirvana influence of both The Offspring's and Green Day's later works around the mid 90's so yeah... |

Yup, Damon Albarn is a genius when it comes to music, and Gorillaz is a testament to his creativity. |
Don't be so ing silly, he's a talentless prick that hops onto whatever happens to be cool at the time and rapes it til it's dead.
Have you ever actually listened to the Gorillaz? or Blur? other people make him sound good, he's painfully when he's by himself.
back on topic
Appetite for Destruction was the first album I ever bought, and will always hold a special place in my heart. I've not got round to listening to Chinese Democracy, but I'm not expecting much really.
As for best bands of our generation, how the has noone mentioned The Pixies? |

Im not bashing Nirvana with not influencing any bands of our time. On a Plain is one of my favorite tunes. Yes they came up around the same time but they were in different scenes. Offspring was together a good 4-5 years before Nirvana. In later music there might be a slight influence but nothing like influences like The Clash, Metallica, Bad Religion, Motley Crue, Rancid, The Ramones ect. |

Usually your posts are funny. But this one true. It's because they died young and couldn't go crazy like Axle...then no one would be washing their balls today.
*edit* was only properly introduced to Joy Division last year but their is dope. |

Saying Guns n Roses are the best musicians in rock, is like saying Armin Van Buuren is the best musician in electronic music. Yeah you get the picture...
What comes next? Scorpions are the best rock musicians ever...!?
If you gonna say that Guns'n'Roses is the best modern rock band then i'm gonna go with U2. Because they do the stadium thing with some deepness and they have made some great music (especially during the 80s) which is both poppy and atmospheric at the same time.
And anyway the best rock music doesn't usually come from "stadium stars" but from more underground efforts. I'm talking about "substantial"rock music not sing-along hands-in-the-air poppy rock music. For example many people said that Nirvana were the best rock band from the early 90s. They were certainly the most famous, probably due to the eccentric dark "tormented" personality of Kurt Cobain, but My Bloody Valentine were doing much better things (experimentally and aesthetically) during the same time (not to talk about even more underground bands like the amazing Slowdive or Stereolab from a few years after). Also Nirvana supposedly "killed metal", but the gold-era of metal was-guess when-the 90s, with the birth of all sorts of experimental metal genres-power/epic, atmospheric death-gothic,doom, symphonic, progressive, norwegian majestic black etc. Its just that metal stopped to be strictly about crazy haircuts and started to become more theatrical and underground-more of an artistic statement than catchy sing-along moments like the 80s Iron maiden and Metallica stuff. Generally speaking, usually underground stuff have the highest quality in rock (and metal) music.
For modern times, rock music of the highest quality comes from the "Post-Rock" genre hands down (and i think its sort of a re-generation of the 70s gold progressive-rock movement but without the drama, the colours and the over-epicness). Most post-rock is not famous probably due to the fact that in most of the times it doesn't have vocals! One band that has-Sigur Ros- is more famous and this is also a great band. 90s? Well ,"Shoegaze" was excellent but few people know it, because it was overshadowed by the "mainstream dirtyness" of grunge. 80s? You have all these stadium "buttrock" bands like Scorpions and Motley Crue yet the most quality stuff IMO comes from early-mid 80s underground experimental new-wave/post-punk bands, like Joy Division, Cure (the early years),The Smiths, The Sound, The Chameleons, Echo and The Bunnymen,The Durutti Column, Sad Lovers and Giants, Cocteau Twins (U2 comprise the most mainstream end of this genre)...these bands have created a dynamic, dreamy, dark and melodic sound, and were probably the first to expriment with minimalistc dance paterrns, ethereal synth-lines, samplers, drummachines and tape recorders and all sorts of atmospheric quitar distortions (they were the first to introduce those concepts to the mainstream since these ideas were probably firstly generated by obscure German "Kraut-Rock" bands during the 70s). This is the genre that spawned other-more experimental-genres like industrial,synth-pop,electro,gothic, ethereal and avant-garde and contributed to the development of electronic music.
Like in all music, you have to dig deeper to find the good stuff. Sales and fame is not a good index of quality, especially in rock-music in which record-sales can be driven by the rock-stardom of the musicians alone rather than the music itself. Look who is famous now...emo-rock bands like Tokio Hotel...doesn't mean that they are actually good...My God... |

This thread cracks me up. Most of the people commenting in it were probably not born yet or less than 8 years old in 1987 when Appetite dropped. Of ing course you don't think GnR was the greatest band of our generation because its not your ing generation. Those of us that were around when metal was the most popular form of rock music know why they were the greatest. Yes I know the genre was soon to be on the decline, but what GnR did was they took what every metal band did before them and did it better. They were absolutely everything a kid was looking for in a rock band in the late 1980s:
Heavy drug abuse, especially H and coke - check
Songs about drug and alcohol abuse - check
Songs filled with cursewords - check
ing lots of hot chicks - check
Band always on the edge of breaking up - check
Most band members were alcoholics - check
Long hair/I'm a badass style - check
Band shows up late for gigs/trashes the stage - check
Parents absolutely hate them and every song they recorded - check
Frontman is crazy, drug abusing, foul mouthed, and always involved in some kind of controversy - check
So out of control you make Motley Crue look like upstanding citizens - check
Sorry, but if you are not old enough to remember the 1980s you can't possibly understand the relevance of GnR |

This post re-establishes the concept of "wrongness"
1)Guns'n'Roses is a metal band
2)When you have lived the thing you know better
3) The older you are the better you are. Plus anyone younger than you is inherently handicapped when it comes to conversations.
4)Metal and Rock are only about drug abuse, whores, alcohol and cursewords
5)The 80s was only about those things
5) Kids usually like their music to be filled with those things.
6) You are only good im playing rock and metal when you are ed-up in a public/famous way.
7) Your post was good
8) Xanax is an innocent drug that has no side-effects and improves cognitive functions
9) Its good to be outspoken about a subject when you have little knowledge of it
10) Well every line of your post in general!

your post reinforces every point I made.
Are you old enough to remember and listen to rock music in the 1980s? Did you live in the US in the 1980s? If not please exit the thread because GnR is not a band of your generation so how are you going to comment? I never said being older is better dumb. What I said is if you are not old enough to remember the 1980s you can't understand the significance of GnR. If you ask someone who grew up in the 1970s what was the greatest band of their generation you think they are gonna say GnR? No, they are gonna say one of those 70s rock bands. Just like all the people in this thread who grew up in the 90s are not gonna say GnR either. If you weren't old enough to listen to their music at the time they were popular you won't understand why someone who was would call them the greatest rock band of their generation.
Does that concept make sense to you simpleton? :gsmile: |
