I still think waves are not an option for a budget home studio - they are good, but so expensive for what you're getting and the money can be better spent elsewhere.

By the way, there are NO working waves cracks for Mac Leopard, so don't even bother trying.

Cryo's absolutely right, but if everyone chips in then you can make up your own mind....

my 2c....the Voyagers are lovely but a get a second hand one as they are still expensive and don't do everything. Polar is great and probably most versatile, but I've always like the nords. It's going to come down to what you like I'm afraid. If you need moar bass, the the voyager - no contest, but if you need an all rounder then the polar wins, unless you really like the Nords.

thanks for the input fellas

it seems like the voyager would be my best bet, i have a lot of soft synths like i said and i think that the voyager could give me the sound that i dont have..

tried out the waves demos. they're cool but you guys are right about it being overpriced.
also i heard jerome isma-ae uses the c4 mulicompressor, gotta check that one out

how about that new arturia synth, heard that it comes with all the moog sounds and they sound quite similar?

$3000? Do a lot of research before buying, go back and forth...

But id go this route...get the Voyager used and UAD Card + Plugins. Or the Voyager and an outboard compressors DBX 160 and Empirical Labs Distressor.

Dont get the Waves stuff, I use the C1 compressor the REQ 6 a lot, go with UAD and just pick and choose the plugins you need. Waves bundles throw in too many things you might never use.

Or wait for the new Arturia synth. And get a Summing Mixer like Speck or Dangerous and two outboard compressors like DBX 160 and FMR RNC to go along with it.

I think i really want the voyager for sure now after hearing demos..

but what does all this mean lol explain please

and whats UAD?

use about $1500 to acoustically treat your space.
use the rest for a second pair of monitors.

UAD is a card you put in your computer. It's like a second CPU (a DSP chip), except it is only for processing audio plugins that support it.

The "DSP card" technology is house... It is an old concept from the days when computer CPUs were not fast enough. These days, your average CPU has a hell of a lot more power than any UAD card on the market. Any UAD plugin could be easily ported to a native format - infact it would run alot better and would sound exactly the same. The card is basically just an over glorified copy protection dongle.

That said, UAD plugins are generally better quality than a lot of native plugins.

Personally, I would spend the money on acoustic treatment and a Virus Ti or a Voyager. Whatever is left, I would put back in the bank for more sensible investments.

just don't invest in america

There is absoltely no need to spend lots of money on treatment, especially if your room isn't well suited anyway.

Check out this thread for more info on how to make the most of your room and only spending a little money.

Please add to it if you want and I'll try to help with the acoustics of your room.

Echo is absolutley right about AUD cards being outdated and glorified protection. Don't bother with them unless you really happen to like their plugins.

Bamshad, if your not sure what summing mixers are or what a dbx 160 is then I would suggest not spending all your money until you've done some more research. It sounds like you know your synths and the voyager is just great, so that's a safe bet - go with that for now (second hand) and wait to see what you feel you need a little further down the line.

ok so moog voyager + room treatment

now by room treatment you mean those foamy things you put under your monitors and on the walls right? (cause i got magazines under my monitors haha)

i saw that other thread and looks like you gotta see what im working with so...

yeah i'll clean my room too loll :toothless

I'd save the money and spend it slowly on really neccesary things. Don't just spend it because its there.

I'd also look at the dave smith stuff if you want an analogue synth. Voyager is overpriced IMO. Otherwise, a Virus or Nord lead is always reliable and awesome.

If I had 3 grand, then right now I would be buying an RME fireface 800, a field recorder, new earphones, a new Ipod, and a nice microphone. but thats just me.

Well im pretty happy with what i got, and i've been looking to buy a great hardware synth for a while now

recently picked up the duet and a shure mic, so im mainly worried about the room treatment, big synth and mastering.. i'll most likely upgrade to an Ensemble interface and neuman mic later
