I think you're the one missing the point dude. My gets pirated left right and center and I am not complaining... if anything it makes my music more accessible and helps to generate more attention for me.
Instead of crying about how you're losing money from physical copies, take a step back and ask yourself how you can harness people's desire to access your music for free. (Because, Face it - this is not going away.)
It gives you a perfect pull to focus people's attentions. Use your music to get people out to your shows, to pay attention to you on a regular basis.
It is 10x harder to get the focus of a fan for the first time than it is to retain their attention. Grab them with some free music that may ultimately drive them to invest in your cause.
This is -NOT- a crisis that is killing the MUSIC industry, this is a phenomenon that is killing the business of selling CDs. For anyone to say otherwise is simply untrue and you're completely missing the point. If that is your mindset you will miss the big opportunity that is presenting itself to independent artists and amateur musicians all over the world.
It has NEVER been easier for new artists to attract attention, and if done properly, generate revenue.
You haven't been doing this for very long, have you?

...of course i know giving away your music is a great marketing technique. And it sure does help for exposure. That is all fine and dandy if i am the one executing this move not having my bread and butter taken away because some "dj" on his pc is sharing a track he bought with the whole interweb!!! i know it likely won't end but it pisses me off how socially acceptable it has become to steal tracks. Mixes are kool imo, but tracks for dj's should be legal copies. plus the better bit rates are another reason to pay. Tracks may actually be as exciting to listen to as vinyl was(*oopsz).

Would you rather have someone who cannot afford your music not playing at all? Give someone a reason to support you and if you're compelling enough they will.
That "Dj" if he has a large enough listener base is now an extension of your online marketing strategy, like it or not, you just got yourself some free listeners. If you were serious about your endeavor you would be focusing your efforts on how you can benefit from the attention - unwanted or not. Simple as that imo.

all i got to say is i have a newfound respect for steve angello after seeing him consume copius amounts of tequila mid-set and make out with some random in the dj booth and still managing not to up when it was his turn to spin. all at pacha nyc mind you anyway ^5 to him. still like ingrosso the best.
what about that thread and him and the bull about buying shoes/

In 2007, I believe Steve was just getting the best of his career noticed worldwide. He was in fine shape in terms of his monetary demands.
I think the blog post was a silly stab at adding some clever PR to the relations with his closer fans that actually read his blog. Embellishing a thread with STeve Angello all over it is only going to give more people a name to look up and realize he's doing decent work. I'll admit, I like and buy his work. Others will end up finding it just the same, be it after this thread or after his blog post.
Brittney Spears benefits from ever piece of BAD slut-bag-ugly-mommy press she gets.
This is a tip of the iceberg.
So be it that he's just picking on an ol news item, and yes everyone's missing out on CD/vinyl sales, but hey... 3 record stores have closed in Toronto in the past few years. That tell you the paradigm on music marketing and music sales is changing. Adapt or die!!
MWAAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA1
Maybe We should start a thread on how David Akermanis makes supposed Sega Genesis music, and then claim that Sega may have an in on this scheme..
care to comment??

I thought producers loved making music. If you're in it for the money, you have to realize that we're in an age where illegal downloading is EVERYWHERE and there will be people that will never spend another hard earned dollar for music when they can get it for free. If you love making music, then that's all that should matter.

yup is preety lame when you find links to blogs that have downloaded your track 6500 times for free :s
Luke Native
like it is a nice compliment to have such support but still preety wild when your barely breaking even
just a labor of love these days and a means to acquire status within the industry to get more bookings
