Yes! Free-thinking is the answer. Excuse me for "coming after you believers", but I feel that nobody should ever indoctrinate a child or teach them myths as though they were truths with the expectation that the child will grow up believing those myths for the rest of his or her life. You'd feel the same way if you lived in a community full of scientologists and YOU were among the minority.
If we spend all of these resources teaching our children how to talk to the ceiling, couldn't we do better? Couldn't we teach them to understand and feel connected to their role as a member of humanity, on the same profound emotional level that many theists feel they are connected to their belief in the supernatural? Can't we instill the same kind of emotional need to achieve the globally optimal (Pareto-optimal) solution to the prisoner's dilemma? Surely we can. And surely we can do it without teaching them that myths are truths and causing them to lead delusional lives.
I thoroughly understand the concept of faith and all of its psychological and moral implications. I still find it incredibly repulsive. Please don't try to tell me what I do and do not understand. Surely you can do better than that.
And with respect to Eugenics... yes, this is a very important topic that everyone should understand. People need to be aware of the way their reproductive choices affect the species, and if you find this idea repulsive, then you are blind to many of the issues facing modern humanity. We HAVE reached the singularity, and there is much more to eugenics than Nazi-esque "racial hygiene". |

You know, I used to really feel the same way about suicide: that it was the ultimate unforgivable act...but that changed when I started working with the mentally ill.
Nobody REALLY wants to die, so you know that when someone is successful in trying to kill themselves there had to be some pretty serious issues going on.
It's pretty ing sad, really. |
