These exemptions make me sick.

Childrens clothes and tampons? This is so that he can calm the poor and feminist groups before they start whining about how unfair this is to poor people and women. What a douche! If you are going to go down this stupid road, How about razors for men?

What about hard working normal people? They have no rights! It pays to be a poor whiney welfare bum in socialist Ontario!

STOP THE TAX GRAB!!!

I wish we could impeach dalton or recall him but alas, we dont have a real democracy here

... and tampons?

Tampons SHOULD be taxed.

Washable sanitary pads are taxed right now. Why does an environmentaly responsible product like this gets taxed and a disposable one not?

Disposable items should be taxed, recycleable ones should not.

Harmonized provincial and federal tax could have brought prices lower, but a fee hike will ensure prices remain unchanged

Globe and Mail Update

Ontario isn't about to let this recession party get out of hand.

Citing a need for “social responsibility,” the Ontario government is taking special steps to avoid reducing its taxes on liquor.

The province is forced by a new agreement with the federal government to standardize its provincial tax at eight per cent on all but a few products and services. But there's a catch – booze taxes are currently higher.

So, in a move to cut off what would have been a drop in alcohol prices for consumers – and in the provincial revenue they generate - Ontario will simply add new alcohol fees to make up the difference.
Customers of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario won't be getting any tax breaks in Ontario's 2009 budget.

The net effect is a wash, and the average booze buyer won't see any difference in the total price when the new tax kicks in next year.

Currently, provincial taxes on liquor retail (at the LCBO, Beer Store and Wine Rack locations) are set at 12 per cent, while taxes on alcohol bought in restaurants and bars is 10 per cent. Both numbers will fall to eight per cent under the new agreement.

The new fees will be built into the bottle cost, before the lower tax is added to achieve the same total cost.

Government officials noted the new fees will maintain government revenue from alcohol sales.
