If the neocons had their way, we would have bombed Iran by now.

Clovis: in a nit-picky way, I'd say one precedent for democracy/freedom in Iraq would be Saddam gassing thousands of Kurds in his own country. Otherwise, you make an excellent point that I completely agree with (miracle?). From historian Dr. Hanson of Stanford:

When I say no precedent I mean they were probably the worst off in terms of knowing what to do with a democracy. They have no frame of reference for it. The Iranians are more educated, more modern, and more civic minded. The Kurds are a different story since they have been operating under limited autonomy for some time now.

I don't agree that liberating Iraq has made the democratic movement in Iran stronger.

But yes, I have been agreeing with many right wing friends in recent days because people in the streets dying for freedom is something that moves us all.

Lemonad
The ing Basij including children who are brainwashed into all this.

These ing scumbags shouldn't be killing their own people, but the leaders that are forcing them to do this.

I'm glad this is happening, however my thoughts go out to the dead.

This is something Iran wanted, something for the regime to show its true face.

Does it truly believe it's making things right here by killing people? This will make Iranians more fierce, resulting in the demise of Ahmadinejad and Khamenei.

If only Khomeini was alive to see this, he wouldn't have let this kind of thing happen.

Letter just sent to Obama from Mousavi:

quote:
From the Office of Mr. Mir Hossein Mousavi

To the President of the USA, Mr. Barack Hussein Obama:

Dear Mr. President,

In the name of the Iranian people, we want you to know that when you recently made the statement “Achmadinejad or Mousavi? Two of a kind,” we consider this as a grave and deep insult, not just to Mr. Mousavi but especially against the judgment of the Iranian people, against our moral conviction and intelligence, especially those of the young generation that comprises a population of 31 million.

It is a specially grave insult for those who are now fighting for democracy and freedom, and an unwarranted gift and even praise for Mr. Khamenei, whose security forces are now killing peaceful Iranians in the streets of every major city in the country.

Your statement misled the people of the world. It was no doubt inspired by your hope for dialogue with this regime, but you cannot possibly believe in promises from a regime that lies to its own people and then kills them when they demand the promises be kept.

By such statements, your administration and you discourage the Iranian people, who believe and trust in the values of democracy and freedom. We are pleased to see that you have condemned the regime’s murderous violence, and we look forward to stronger support for the rightful struggle of the Iranian people against the actions of a regime that is your enemy as well as ours.

lol... yeah it's definitely impressive how the new administration has handled foreign policy with their new brand of "smart power".

"Smart power" is a term I haven't seen before... I'm guessing you made that up?

quote:
And, can you please describe exactly what a neocon is?

A foreign policy neo-conservative is someone who advocates neo-conservatism: the ideology that promotes unilateral action of hegemons free from systemic constraints. Basically, a neo-conservative believes in the maxim that, in the international system, might makes right, and that hard (military) power is the most effective method of countering threats to the U.S. national interest. Unlike other more traditional conservatives, neo-conservatives advocate engaging players in the international arena, not isolating them. This is more or less what Kant termed Machtpolitik - power politics writ large on a global scale.

Hence, the threat that Saddam posed to U.S. interests in the Middle East warranted military action. To neo-conservatives, the fact that we could do it justified the removal of Saddam from power; externally, neo-conservatives adopted the doctrine of preventive conflict in order to legitimize (and inflate) the threat Iraq posed. This is the crux of where the true debate over the legality and morality of the conflict in Iraq lies (in my opinion).

Furthermore, neo-conservatives believe that national interest and goals of governance are determined by a group of elite individuals and not by the democratic process; in other words, the ideals of the elites set the social and political agenda, and not the needs of the mob. This determines both foreign policy norms (where the values of powerful states are pursued while internationalist institutions that aggregate the values of weaker states are generally disregarded) and domestic agenda items (limiting the role of government in both social movements and social services).

Does that definition work for you, or were you looking for an official definition?
