From the trailer seems to be an exploration of intolerance with a nod to apartheid and the global refugee/asyum-seeker problem.. except with aliens, a bit of cgi and action mixed in. Am I on the right track?
Think I might watch it on the weekend. |
I didn't think too much of this movie being about any social or cultural message, other than highlighting what we already know: refugee camps breed poverty, dispair and crime. All different colors and types of people showed varying degrees of prejudice towards them and the movie does a good job I think showing that empathy and concern are not easy to achieve... for me a pretty big WTF moment (other than the alien wearing the pink bra) was how easily they pulled the plug on developing eggs and the guy said laughing, "Here keep this as a souvenir from giving your first abortion."
IMO the prawns were an illustration of how motivation and/or individual potential is wasted by living a managed life... the UN-like body that regulated them turned them into nothing more than depressing scavengers over the course of 20 years despite their strength, intelligence, and technology. |

HUH?
This was a film which touched on social injustice, immigration, discrimination and the social calamity that comes with it. At the same time, the film is able to effectively portray how 'residents' can take on a stubborn stance, filled with hatred and misunderstanding, mainly due to ignorance. At the same time, D-9 is able to convey this notion that our 'territory'; that which we protect so blindly; is not all that's cracked up to be (e.g: their planet had nine moons, ours only one). And we offend and stigmatize that which is unfamiliar - oh so common in America, South Africa, Europe, and many other regions of the world where immigrants become scavengers.
you can analyze this movie in all of it's levels; but, of course, rest assure this film was not intended for the american public; it would be a disaster if it would. No, it wasn't made in Hollywood either - too bad 17ss, this was no cookie cutter film, perhaps transformers would suit your taste

I read an interview with the director who said they were supposed to be drones from an insect-like race with a hive mind. Their queen died so they completely lack the direction or leadership for any sort of coordinated action. |
