I can't speak for any of those folks, but Border Community has not really done anything of note lately in my opinion, with the exception of Tobar's music. Nathan Fake has been largely inactive for quite a bit now and the same goes for James Holden.

As for "different", I am less concerned with different than I am with "quality". The Djs I like tend to play quality dance music regardless of what genre tag beatport or anyone else decides to give it.

I'm not sure what you're into now Julia so I can't really help you, but have been some really fresh artists and DJs passing through LA this year, I've had more fun going out than ever before. I think LA is really starting to get a nice cross section of people doing events and a lot of dedicated individuals who really love this music working on having great parties.

Thats the point. We arent constrained. We had SILKY headline(tech house) and KURU of Muse close the night (drum and bass). We almost had PHOTEK if the schedules didnt work out.

We are not constrained to one specific style of music. There will be times Julia will not like our programming for that night. Sometimes she might.

Yes, and you said, other events were constrained, and I am curious as to which those may be? I can't really think of any.

As far as I'm concerned, the only true constraint when booking dance music should be quality, and personally I don't find some of the artists you listed to be quality. Those are matters of personal taste though.

Yeah the MFA's drop was cool, I was not into Fake's though.

I mean really though, these guys were hitting it really big with some great music and Holden dropped some amazing mix comps, 05' 06...since then...??

If the sound they use to bring out is dead now (minimal), you have to respect the fact that club owners and promoters are very much passionate about the sound of the time. Yet have had the business sense to move on to the sound or scene worth promoting. Some might call it pretention, others will call it being clued in to developing sounds and scenes, ultimately being fiscally responsible enough to be able to keep going. I think the bottom line that holds every thing together is the genuine love for the music by many in the scene. As long the passion is there for electronic based music, LA will always continue to have a quality thriving scene, wherever it evolves from here. Think of all the cities that dont got shiiiet, and virtually no choice if they got something. My fellows and felloettes, let us dip our soul biscuits in cranberry sauce and count blessings.

Well a big +1 to this. I'm more interested in hearing DJs that continue to contribute to the scene as a whole and help us all grow just a little bit whether as a DJ or as an inspiration for a production.

i agree. border community's got some talent no doubt, but how long ago were they making waves? in the last few years many other people have been making the waves and so i'm paying attention to them now... not that i won't go check out one of the bc guys when he comes to town, if i get a chance, but i'm not too bent on it. there's way too much great talent passing through town these days and frankly i'm already having trouble keeping up with them.

i listened to Fake live at electric zoo over labor day weekend and it was one of my favorite live sets this year. like you mentioned though, its personal taste. while holden hasnt done any comps, his live mixes are enough for me at the moment. still finding really good gems in sets.

they've been making waves, just not the usual prog you're used to and like. its more spacey glitchy experimental melodic techno/neotrance. where were you for tobar on halloween anyway :whip:

This thread cracks me up. But invariably I have opinions on the state of the scene from my personal perspectives (on bookings and events in general - and I do sympathize with Julia's perspective and no one can accuse me of not going out or know what is going on here in LA with club land in general)...

Personally, I'm bored with a lot of the music that is coming out today. And with the production values of most parties too (mine included, sorry to say) - well, maybe the droid parties notwithstanding as they tend to put some serious effort into the atmosphere as well as book great djs.

Its one of the reasons why I'm stopping Compression for several months. I think we are turning a corner in the music/scene here in LA. The last half of 2009 has seen a decline in attendance as well as a general downturn in the growth of scene in general (notwithstanding Dub Step parties and the ever present trance scene. TRS-ONE. lol

From what I can tell, as I have been hitting everything these days as either a DJ or just an attendee (hollywood, downtown underground, commercial, etc) is that the nature of the scene is trending towards people just wanting to have fun, not be roped into a particular "sound" and lord help you if it isn't hitting the right amount of euphoric notes and high energy. I think it has something to do with people just wanting to escape more than be challenged by a new sound or something that they have to reach a bit to understand. They'd rather sing along to stuff, have it be tension releasing and, in some ways, super obvious (as opposed to some deep, non-moving, evolving over large amounts of time kinda stuff that was more popular on the MNML set a few years back. Now that particular music has been dead a long time - and died just like when Prog House got all dark and without character about 7 to 8 years back.)

The general malaise of the scene, has a few factors associated with it IMO. I blame the economy, the relative lack of exciting music being produced this year (vs. the last few years) in techno / house etc. I also think there are possibly just too many things for people to go out to and its caused a lot of what we formerly thought as special as now more of a commodity. IOW, lots of people don't worry about missing anything anymore because, well, let's face it - a similar type of experience is either the next night or right around the corner.

Lot's of samey-ness now IMO.

I mean, c'mon - 150 people or so per party in a city of millions for what is seen as one of the epicenters of dance music in the U.S. (particularly for techno house parties)?

That's saying something, I think about the vibrancy of the culture and sound definitely. Even earlier this year the attendance was notably higher on a lot of things - and this last half of the year, downturn. Very interesting, and almost sudden, trend from my perspective.

On a personal level, I need to find inspiration (again). And I can tell you honestly, its not coming from browsing the releases at Beatport these days. lol It hasn't for a LONG time.

I'm starting to think about other things and am pretty ready to leave Compression behind as a regular concern, except when I find a pretty exceptional line up that excites me (hence the special one offs for 2010, not a regular club night which we've done quite fine with over the last 4 years... but I'm over it now - and the saturation of the scene in general).

I remember I felt the same way about Breaks and Boom Box back in 2004 / 2005 as I do now about Compression and the scene in general.

I was listening to one of my breaks mixes this last weekend and I was like - DAMN. This is ing good. I just might go back there again. lol

Anyway - this rant is no diss against the active promoters posting in this thread per se, just my own personal observation of what I see and what motivates me or not. There are always bright spots of activity in every down turn - specific events, some special track or specific night that went off, but as an overall trend things are definitely evolving into something else and its siphoning off the energy, attendance, and at the expense of the type of music events that were absolutely popping even just a year ago.

Something is amiss, IMO.

I'm slowing down and waiting for inspiration to strike again rather than just try to keep a train going a track that is bound to derail.

At a super brass tack level I think the music being released is largely boring, derivative, and lacking in pushing envelopes right now - and certainly the sense of a cultural movement wrapped around tech/house (revival) has been absorbed into the overall zeitgeist of electronic dance music. Its just not that unique at the moment.

So, when things get less dynamic, less inspirational, less provocative (like when breaks did for me), I get bored.

I'm bored right now, to be honest. Excited about this Friday, but after that, I'm happy to sit back in silence and be a student again until something really grabs me that I can't shake. Then I'll get back on the train.

Of course, being a dj still is fun. But I'm having problems these days, picking tracks, too. lol :)

.02,

rob.

Miss Julia
Wow Rob, you seriously took the words right out of my mind, in regards to the music that has been coming out and the scene as of late. You've always had a way with your words that makes complete sense. Thank you for that.

I will miss the Compression parties very much, and I'm looking forward to you starting it up again, once things get better and you're motivated again. :)

Yes, exactly! It's all about your taste in music. I haven't been liking the stuff I've been hearing at clubs... so I rely on live sets to keep my music interest going. Border Community stuff hasn't disappointed me.
