Not really. It's funny, I didn't mention it in my original post, but I listened to your Mad Monkey set directly after this EM and enjoyed your set far more. I have only about 6 sets on my small mp3 player which I've been listening to over and over, as I have spent about 36 hours on buses in the past two weeks.

There is a particular type of rhythm I find very irritating, which, as you saw, I refer to as 'dooka-dooka'. I can't describe it properly, but it has a very raggedy and persistent feel. A lot of contemporary tech-house uses this particular type of rhythm, whereas trance tends not to.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about, though in this case I actually quite like this track.

In addition, nearly all these 'dooka-dooka' tracks feature almost exactly the same boring white-noise clap. I find most of it unimaginative and monotonous.

I think you know very well that I like a lot of good progressive trance; Solar Fields etc. This particular kind of try-hard tech just doesn't do it for me. Also, as I said, I really enjoyed the 00.db mash up mix which used a similar formula but employed it much more effectively.

My team pointed me in this direction to see the reaction on my recent Essential mix, and I'm blown away. As you all know, I have a different take on the Trance scene so it's rewarding to see such a warm response. You guys and girls have always been supportive of me here on Tranceaddict, is truly warming and I can't thank you enough.

John

P.s. The sample I used on the into & outro was the original vocal sample from Dan Diamond

John its was an amazing set, I used to promote for you at Arc with Nick and Mike Bindra. This was one of your top sets ever imo.

Samarkande — Samba – was the top tune for me... It reminded me of Sasha Digweed at twilo days... relentless..!!! Keep it up we're loving this sound in NYC right now :) please come and visit us soon!

Good tune indeed but the mastering is terrible

He's ing awesome live and tends to play more banging tracks. Expect him to craft a set similar to the second half of the EM.

He's GREAT !!! I've already seen him 4 times and he has never dissapointed me. Definitely worthwhile seeing him!!! I'm seeing him this summer for the 5th time here in Belgium, this time with his 00.db project. I'm pretty curious how that will be :D

I agree with Domesticated btw, the times I've seen him he's always played more banging. Especially because his gigs were at most 1h30 and he couldn't really take the time to build his set. And also due to the dj's before him which were already rather banging

John's March Diary on his EM:

I’m overwhelmed by the reaction of my recent Essential mix on BBC 1Radio, my team sent me links from forums across the world, and it’s amazing seeing so much positive feedback. It’s impossible for me to post on each and every forum thanking everyone for their kinds words, so I’ll use my Blog here to let everyone know how thankful I am for the support. I put so much work into that mix, when Pete Tong invited me to do another mix I couldn’t just do a regular DJ mix because we hear thousands of them each week on internet radio stations, so I wanted to treat this completely different making it something special, kinda like a collectors item. Last year myself and The Digital Blonde did a 2-hour mash up mix on Global Trance Grooves and this inspired me to take the same approach with this mix. Every single track has been changed in some way with added synth parts, edits and FX. I treated this like a 2-hour remix, listening to every element of each track, moulding them together with my producer skills. When tracks are mixing, I edited them to ensure no parts clashed, even processing problematic elements and frequencies. You’ll also hear elements carry over all through the mix, making ceaseless mix so it feels like one unbroken journey. From this reaction I’m seriously thinking about doing this live at gigs, maybe with some occasional help from The Digital Blonde at gigs too….that’s if you want to see it ?! Maybe I’ll incorporate this into my forthcoming JOOF Editions nights that are coming up….maybe I’ve just found the special formula for JOOF Editions club nights. You tell me, after all I need to listen to you? I’d be happy to perform a 4/5 hour version of my Essential mix to an open minded crowd, it would be a dream for me.

Super cool to read how much work he put into making the EM flow as it does.

This is truth. When I tried to see him I was the victim of some awful promoting and inconsiderate DJing, and I left before he came on.
