The problem is that DJs never get booked on the strength of their DJing, but their production.

How many big-name DJs can you list in the world with very few or no productions to their name?

Well said John :)

We often do get carried away with the bashing, probably because we care about the music a little bit too much :haha:

This is part of the problem, producers can't earn money from productions alone due to filesharing, so they either get a regular job or turn to DJing to earn an income. Many admit, they can't DJ and just do it for the money. We see the market flooded with producers, who arnt really DJ's, they will just play their own productions, hit after hit.

It's a double edged sword. I as a DJ need producers music, so want them to continue in this industry.
A few years back, producers played 'live sets' and DJ's supported them. The clubbers then accepted in the live set, they would hear all this guys work, then when the DJ came on the went back into DJ mode, this really worked.

Producers don't make money unless they tour, when they become popular, promoters book them to play their own tunes, thus the problem J00F is talking about. Similarly, how many world renowned DJs do you know of, that have never produced anything?

I think a real solution to this problem is, form a team. If you're a producers, find a great DJ who likes/spins your genre, or not, whatever, and you take him on tour with you, you're both up there on the decks, you learn from him, and then you take him to the studio and teach him some production aspects. Everybody wins.

i dont really agree on the money-argument u people say, because djeing is actually a job, a fulltime one, hard work, late hours, flights, weekends etc etc, while producing, well imo isnt really a job. sitting home in your safe couch with your laptop a few hours every second day. its nice to have some money from it, but the djs definitly should have more just because their work is much harder.

And you don't think producers lock themselves in their studios for days on end smoking cigarettes and drinkinng coffee, grinding out a professionally mastered club hit? Pick up a copy of Pro Tools, go and buy a few thousands of dollars worth of equipment and try for yourself.

You're saying the producers don't deserve the money that the DJs spinning their music do?

im saying that djeing is a ing hard job! nothing else. producers earned to much during the 80s and 90s. the whole music industry was ing maniac lol rockstars and all. now theres a better balance to it imo. i know that alot of pro producers work hard, and they have to face the fact that they also must perform to get money. i want my favorite artists on the scene from time to time, damnit, nothing more. work for their money. :D

Making a good track is no small job... why do you think there is so much generic wannabe stuff out there today? It takes alot of time and money before you can crank out bangers.

And its sad how bad music piracy has gotten today, especially with the younger crowd. Its almost as if they think they are entitled, and it there is nothing inherently wrong with it!

Would you not agree that things have turned around the other way, DJ's are now the rock stars in this decade earning too much?

Subtle
Producers should have gotten money for tracks played in clubs by big DJs, a chunk of the entrance fee actually.

it got nothing to do with time and money man, its all about talent. now u have awesome software for 500USD which is all u need. it takes less time and money than before because of this.

i have no idea what djs earn. the bigshots earn probably too much ofcourse but the average dj probably doesnt compared to their hard work (mostly i talk about traveling and late night working every weekend).

thats a ing good point. if djs had to register what they playd it would have been possible, like radio stations royalties.
