Yeah, saying things isn't going to make a difference. Actions are needed. |

I'll be interested in this J00F tour with "local talent". When I saw him he was headlining an awful trance night packed with exactly the kind of egotistical DJs boshing out anthems irrelevant to their time slot that he and his fans are bemoaning in this thread. For someone who writes so much about the problems with trance, he seems very complicit with them. As someone said recently, he rarely gets chance to play a proper trance set like his Essential Mix that unfolds gradually, because he has 90 minute headline slots where he needs to bang out the big tunes. |

It's kinda why I speak out (yes I know I do it often through frustration...sorry!) I'm not preaching to say 'hey you all must play the same music as me', my point is saying you can have a healthy career playing the music you want, as I do. Most new DJ's and producers I talk too don't play the music they want, they all seem to make the exact same mistake thinking if they make a track for Armin, Tiesto whoever it maybe, if these guys play it on their radio shows or in a set it will fast track their careers. In reality this doesn't happen, it's why we have the market flooded with similar music as they are making them for the top guys.
The scene always goes through cycles and I feel we're coming to a new one. Most music lovers I know don't bother going out because the clubs/festivals will be packed with a more commercial crowd, this is who these guys attract these days. We can all change the scene together, the sooner we start hunger for more specialist nights with local talent the sooner clubs will warm to this.
Years ago I was at this very point with frustration, so I started my own clubs nights just so that I could play the music I wanted and many other DJ's did this too. It doesn't take much to gather a few friends together and fill a small club, the promoter/club owner will be happy and will let you use the club more! History is repeating itself again, why I'm taking JOOF nights on tour so I can play what I want and support new talent in the process.
I myself have no care for being a top 10 DJ, I don't want fame or glory, I don't want to make pop records with pop videos and many of my colleagues around me feel the same. The past decade has been pretty strange seeing the pop business model come into the specialist DJ market, but you can use myself and other similar DJ's as inspiration that you don't need hit records or have a marketing company behind you to succeed. I don't have them and have no desire to use them.
All of you here can make change in this scene, it desperately needs it. |

I kind've disagree with you here on some level. While i agree that it is not the right thing to do as they aren't playing the music they want to, but playing music to the liking of Armin, Tiesto etc, you are partly wrong you say that it doesn't fast track their career i can give you an example of a local DJ here in Brisbane that did exactly that and now at WMC he just won the breakthrough artist of the year title. He is tyDi. He is a guy with a lot of talent but he doesn't put that into use by playing his own style rather he DJs to the liking of Armin and his tunes produced are of same nature as Armin/Tiesto, but he did this and Armin took him on, and now he has built a career out of this.
There are a lot of local DJs here that are far more talented than this guy, who regularly play their own style of tunes and do warmups for a lot of the big name DJs like Sasha, Digweed, Gui Boratto, Hernan Cattaneo and the likes and these DJs stick to their own style but these guys don't make it onto the big stage. That is the problem in the industry and my issue with it. |

You see, in my eyes, we are all one in this scene and there should be no rules. DJ's should be allowed to express themselves musically and play all sorts of genres in their sets, as I like too. I simply play music that I love, I don't see it as a; House, Psy, Techno, Trance track, I play the track because it's a dam good track. In todays scene the DJ is expected to play a certain sub genre and throw out all the tunes that people know!

Really?
In that case, why have all your Essential Mixes been trance sets? Why do you play nothing but trance on your radio shows? Why is your radio show called "Global Trance Grooves"? How come all your mixcds have nothing but trance on them?
If DJs are expected to play a certain sub genre and you're opposed to this, what are you doing to buck the trend and set a good example? Your consistent selection of trance exclusively whenever the spotlight is on you makes the quoted statement above ring quite hollow to these ears. |

The Max Graham podcast has actually a good mix of genre's. He doesn't play just the 1 genre.
Basically his philosophy is, if it sounds good then he'll play it. Anything from trance, house, tech, minimal. :) |

Ermmm.. I guess you have never heard of progressive house before :conf: Thats pretty odd, because thats how John starts most of his sets. |

John sets lately have been a mixture of progressive house, progressive trance, trance, psy progressive and psy trance. Just listen to the last essential mix and you will clearly notice the progression from one genre to the other.
Sure, he is a dj specialized in Trance music, but his take on Trance isn't limited to just one subgenre like the majority of Trance djs.
You are lucky to have a more open-minded definition about Trance, because the average Trance listener will say that John set are not even Trance. |

Not on Global Trance Grooves he doesn't.. he doesn't start out with banging trance or psy but he also doesn't start with progressive house for sure.
But yes, John does mix it up a bit genre wise but not as much as say Max Graham, Blake Jarrell for example do on their podcasts/radio shows. They play a more of a mixture of genre's like prog house, tech house, trance. |

Can't agree on that. For being a trance DJ he is really one of the few that incorporate Psytrance, with progressive house and even some uplifting. I can't think of many other DJs that does that. |

If this is really the best you could come up with to show how diverse and versatile J00f is as a DJ, then you've all just proven my point.
When you're constantly putting yourself and your sets at the same end of the spectrum soundwise, you don't lend much credibility to the philosophy of playing a good tune no matter what people label it.
When was the last time you saw J00f do a special on old 70s funk records? When did J00f last start off his sets with some fresh techno records or a Kerri Chandler-tune? When did you hear him drop a deep jungle/drum n bass track just to throw people off and surprise them? Surely you're not trying to tell me that trance and progressive house are the only two genres he likes? Why do you all settle for so much less from a DJ known for playing trance as far as a varied selection goes? |
