This thing that saddens me is the Trance scene is dominated by commercial Euro Trance, and anyone that plays outside these boundaries wont get a look in. Barriers are put up by these people who support it, if anything these are the people that are alienating themselves from the rest of the scene, many think they are the authority on EDM.
You see, in my eyes, we are all one in this scene and there should be no rules. DJ's should be allowed to express themselves musically and play all sorts of genres in their sets, as I like too. I simply play music that I love, I don't see it as a; House, Psy, Techno, Trance track, I play the track because it's a dam good track. In todays scene the DJ is expected to play a certain sub genre and throw out all the tunes that people know!
I've been in this game for 25 years, and this cycle is nothing new, I can already see the birth of a new scene so its exciting times. The superstar DJ's have created their own scene making room for a new one that will support more specialist DJ's and producers, eventually a platform for new talent to come through. It shouldn't be a case of just going out when a guest DJ comes in town, we have tons of local talented DJ's on our own doorsteps that should be supported.
When you've experienced these local nights with a 'family vibe' that are packed out with regular faces every week, you crave to get them back as these are the places that let DJ's breathe musically. Todays Trance nights are events, kinda like mini concerts focused around the DJ, so the DJ is forced to play all the hits the crowd require, he just doing his job!
I shouldn't be saying this, but the DJ has got more powerful than the music, it's time to turn things around and get people going out for the music again no matter who is playing. Just go out and have fun with an open mind!!
I'm brave posting on here.....I'l hold my breathe and getting ready for bashing.....but lets try and make this a sensible debate not going off track or attacking each other. I wouldn't be posting here or speaking out if I didn't care for this scene :) |

I have to say though, when you're posting here, you're preaching to the converted. You need to be telling this stuff to your friends like Armin, Tjis, PvD et al. Do you ever say to them "Hey, I think you're destroying EDM / why are you producing / playing utter e?"
As for the "DJ bigger than the music", a friend of a friend is a promoter at the biggest club here in Japan / Asia. Says that Tiesto won't / doesn't like playing there anymore 'cos it's not big enough. Talk about some serious ego issues.:whip: |

What I'd like to see is a proper roundtable discussion where these guys would have to defend their choices (playing stuff just cos "that's what the crowd wants", shifting more and more towards pop music, the ethic behind doing big arena solo gigs etc. etc.) and the moderator has the balls to ask them tough questions.
I somehow doubt that J00f has much to gain from taking this role, though, regardless of how much he wants to champion the "good" trance. |

Amen, I've been saying this for a few years now. I'm in the process of getting to a DJing stage where I can play out, but why am I forced into playing certain genres every time?
It seems the whole scene revolves around these pockets of genres, and even the big names fail to stray.
If a DJ can drop tracks from multiple genres and make it a great set then he should be allowed to, but the amount of DJs who do this are in the clear minority. This is where the big names need to step in and make the change, though I don't see that happening any time soon. |
