He lives in Germany though. Everything except beer is pricier there. Maybe he will end up paying over 1k.

Looks like it's around half that price.

And with a slightly different choice of parts you could get something that is either cheaper or more powerful. If it's for gaming I'd invest more money in a better graphics card, and have a slightly weaker CPU instead. That would run smoothly almost all modern games at normal resolutions (ie, 1440x900 or similar rather than Full HD). Oh, and if you don't have an heavy conscience, get a PC that comes without Windows, you'll save a lot of money grabbing a "free" version of it. ;)

But tbh if Meat187 needs to ask this question I might just recommend a console, because consoles are idiot-proof. Buy a game, stick it in the console, play it. That's it, no need for any more headaches. The advantages of PC's are the ability to customize things (ex: more settings, the ability to mod games), and specialized genres - for example all I play is racing simulation games and Football Manager, neither are available for consoles so I have to stick with PC's. FPS's are better on the PC too. But if you just want to play most other mainstream games, these days they're made for consoles first and only then poorly ported to the PC.

Another advice if you choose to buy a PC: don't save money on the power supply, get a good one from a good brand. The current generation of graphic cards needs power like a mother******, so you don't want to risk frying your computer. Don't judge power supplies just by the amount of watts, 700W from a brand means jack .

Doubt it, the price of that hardware is right about the same here if you know where to shop, can't see Germany being that much more expensive.

Dont compensate on a CPU too much. A lot of games now utilize the cpu a lot for AI and physics and that can slow things down significantly if you are underpowered.

This is interesting, cause I've frequently heard that certain games are only good on certain systems and often suck massively on others. So PC-ports are usually bad?

And yeah, buying a console is indeed easier, no need to think and research for weeks about which parts to buy and where to find them cheapest.
I really need to figure out how much a PC would cost, as this seems to be the decisive factor and I don't intend to spend over 1000 Euros when a console would only cost 300.

Unfortunately you're right, and the idiots usually do stuff like that. Simple solution is to order from the UK or somewhere else.

man, Germany's ed. Is that some post war guilt that compels the government to censor all violence ?

No, the post-war guilt only comes into play with Israel, Jews, Poland and Nazi-comparisons. In that respect we're indeed massively ed, and some of the controversies and scandals that have ensued from it are truely ridiculous.
When it comes to violence it's just retarded bourgeois . Many people entertain the notion that any form of violence, be it in games or movies, will instantly turn all children into homicidal maniacs shooting everyone at their school. Whenever something like that happens the media announces that the shooter has played violent video games and that some politician wants to ban them now.
Incidentally, the famous "Angry German Kid" video was intended as a parody on how games allegedly make kids aggresive and violent.

Sure, you don't want to buy a SLOW one, but I was talking more about that combo DancingMonkey posted there as a example, it'd certainly get more frame rates on most games with, say, a GTX260 card and a Phenom II X4 940 instead, which would be about the same price. I have the 940 and for now that thing's comfortably quick enough!

Meat187: the pricing of the computer pretty much depends on how much you want to spend. You can buy something that barely runs the games at 400€, and you can buy something that will slaughter every game at 1500€. Also, do you need a monitor or not? The monitor is important, because if you want a big one you'll need a more powerful computer to keep up with it.

But I'd say a good enough computer to survive the demands of a not-too-hardcore gamer for 3 or 4 years would be about 800€.

Also, talking about comparisons between different classes of products, notice that a 800€ desktop PC would be far more powerful than a 800€ laptop!

Get a PC.
I can't stand poor frame rates, and this is what all the elite games on consoles have. Very few have consistent frame rates, and very few have them above 30 fps.
PC Games are generally cheaper, although they may soon be hitting the consolised $60 mark.
There's also a lot of versatility to your playing experience via mods and tweaks.

I'd put more budget on CPU than GPU.

I think the better question is what type of games do you like?

If you are into RTS games, competitive games, FPS games, MMORGS, and RPGs with mods then a good gaming pc is what you want.

If you like adventure games, role playing games, sports games, and fighting games then a ps3 is your best bet.

Also if you have a nice TV and sound setup console games look amazing.
