I saved a good amount of money buying a used PC for like $300 and then upgrading it from there. I bought a used pentium 4 from this architecture studio with 4 gigs of ram (3 cause it doesn't have windows 64bit), a video card and a hard drive. I upgraded the card to a 1gig radeon 5770 along with the power supply for like 40 bucks. Then just recently got a new HDD. I can play pretty much anything with it so it's good enough for now.

Next step is replacing the monitor, cause it's a thousand pounds and ing 3 ft deep

Yep, that's about where I'm at as well. And all the ing places I've had to move mine, only for it to be the biggest pain in the ass cause I couldn't fit through doors with my arms around it, etc.

My PC is old as hell, having never been upgraded in the slightest since 2002. But it plays the games I still play...Counter-Strike, Unreal Tournament and the original Red Alert.

Yeah, I agree with Weymouth. Work out what games you want to play (though if you’re after RPG games, ignore the pretend pieces of on the PS3) and then decide which system to buy. But overall, games are much better on PC.

FYI there’s nothing to stop you plugging your PC into a big TV and gaming on your couch. Been doing it for the last 2-3 years. and its awesome!

If you have a neat TV, I'd go with the PS3. I got one very recently and am really happy with it - there are some excellent games that just feel so comfortable with a controller. Also the PS Store that lets you download old PS1 games is awesome. Action games like God of War 3 and Batman: Arkham Asylum look excellent on a TV.

Of course you could just as well do these same things on a PC - almost all the same games, compatibility with USB controllers, etc. And you can use a big tv as a monitor, too. If you already have a PC for the extra versatility though, a PS3 is only a few hundred dollars, and is definitely the most game-y system of this generation, if you ask me. Also, it has an excellent DVD player in it that is easy as hell to use as a remote, so that's less clutter beneath your tv. :p

In the end, the pros and cons can go both ways, and you're just going to have to bite the bullet and pick one. Or both.

Call me old fashioned, but I judge gaming systems purely by the games. Not some faggotry about room near the tv or remotes or whether thoroughly overated games like batman arkham asylum look less than sh1tty on my outdated, 7-year -old hardware.

COR version: hal is a minger.

You're old fashioned because you're old, period.

:p

There's definitely a reason I have both a PC and now a PS3 though. Many games are simply better on the PC, end of. FPS and RTS games are excellent examples of that simply does not work with joysticks. Platformer/action titles like God of War 3 feel so ing comfy on a controller though - I just can't imagine them being any better at all with a mouse/keyboard. So like you and weymouth said earlier - do some research on what games you like to play or specific titles you want, and make your decision from there.

Yeah, because PCs can’t use controllers! :p But PCs definitely miss out on a lot of the 3rd person action games. And when we do get them, often they’re just nasty ports (ala most of the resident evils).

When it comes to games I'd consider buying stuff like:
latest Resident Evil and Silent Hill Installments, Dead Space, Fallout 3, Heavy Rain, FF 13, Uncharted 2, Dantes Inferno, CoD: Modern Warfare 2, etc.
Also, hopefully they soon go back to less fighting in horror games, and more being scared less. :) One of my favorite games was Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, the first part where you have no weapons and explore the creepy town of Innsmouth is just great.

Oh. Ok, I have a ps3 slim, or whatever it's called. The new one, that doesn't look like the old one.

I think it's not backwards compatible though? Or if I DL the (ps1) games they'll work? There are a few that I want, but haven't bought second hand, because I thought there was no backwards goodness? :conf:

Someone fill me in, plz?

Insane. I could build a powerhouse gaming rig with an overclocked quad core 6gb ram, and high end video (not top of the line, but damn good) for no more than $600-700.
