Basically what Nef is saying folks, when it comes to music and art, he prefers paintings...something more static, over stories or cinematic films...something more dynamic. He just took a long route to say it. Thanks nef for the input of your taste.

um, absolutely not. i read far more novels and watch far more movies than look at paintings. as others have said in this thread, you are a complete dolt.
there is a time an a place for everything, and i enjoy many different things, and many different kinds of music.
but when it comes to dance music, i prefer the groove based vertical layering because it is more suited to the continuous, open, mantric, free expression of dance. |

In reference to the Trentemoller thread you used this distinction between horizontal (cinematic) and vertical, as "movie" to "painting a picture." In my reply in this thread to what I quoted, I was'nt saying that you literally feel paintings > films. I was obviously saying in context to music and its relation to vertical and horizontal compositions and arrangements, and that relation to film and paintings. We're getting deep now.

no, i think it's different, just like making a movie is different than painting a picture. |
| quote: | | the horizontally composed 'scored' track can only be understood as a sequential semantic system. middle requires beginning. end requires both middle and beginning, etc. this is more like a sentence or a story. |
A sentence and story in this music context can also be extended to being film or cinematics, through horizontal composition and arrangement. Stories are told through cinematics, and sentences are part of the structure of storytelling.
What I quoted in my previous reply, and translated for people who dont get your self jackoffery (lol) through words, is just another word wrangling to say the same thing you said in what i've quoted above.
Either you are the idiot, or you are inconsistent in your own ideals and beliefs. Though in your defense, of course I cant say you think paintings > films unless you blatantly say it, and in my defense i'm using the music ideals you've shared, what structures inherently narrarate, to make my understanding. |

Can I be the first to say.. wtf are you guys talking about?
Slightly kidding aside.. delving into the intricacies of electronic music is a bit of a turn off for me. In a way, you strip away the core essence of what makes music great to listen to.. house is groovy, trance is uplifting, can't process all this talk of vertical/horizontal sonic vibrational rhythms functioning on a linear plane of existence. /hangsself |

Agreeing to this. The over induldgence in the structure of music is what made me participate in this thread, and the bashing of a rather beautiful structure, in which some of the world's great music has been made through. Its pointless and dangerous to start looking at music in this way, and it takes away the essence of music like you said. I dont think any person who makes music for enjoyment purpose intends for the listener to deconstruct the structure. The structure is just a means to an end, and no one way of making music is right or wrong, if its good music. I love a great vertical or 'purist techno' piece of music, and the only reason why I favor 'progressive' structure is because it can transcend clubs, and find the deep listeners as well. |

I tend to like my trance non-uplifting. There is a reason "uplifting trance" is more or less a seperate genre within trance. Your definition should be "trance is entrancing", but by todays standards it's absolutely not.
Sorry if that was to much delving into the intricacies for you ;) |

"Trance is entrancing" sounds a bit redundant.. erm. Yeah. I was just generalizing about trance when I said it was "uplifting" in the strictest sense without regard for the current climate in electronic music.
I assume 90% of the time that trance music is mainly going to be an uplifting track from, let's say the Armada label. As you can tell, I'm living within my own world, still thinking it's 2003! Wasn't trying to step on any toes, but I do see your point. |

Is this discussion really that hard to process? If you don't want to delve into this kind of discussion, just don't read the thread. I don't think it strips away the core essence of anything, but the music is still music. I don't think like this when I'm actually on a dancefloor, because these techniques and effects are processed automatically and produce an impulsive response... the urge to dance. You don't need to think about this stuff to enjoy the music, but I hate it when people get insecure around thoughtful posts and feel the need to demean them for no real reason. |

while I agree with this, you and nefardec do have a tendency to talk in a very overcomplicated way. Maybe you just like to flex your literacy muscle (have no idea if that was grammatically correct :p ), but often there will be paragraphs of drivel to say very little in the end.
I'm not bashing you for writing in an intelligent manner but sometimes it feels like a simple sentence or two would get your point across much clearer. Instead, it ends up with the two of you going back and forth with no one else understanding what the you are talking about... |
