The Canadian idiots are relatively few, the problem is the international professional protesters/lunatics that like to play the global circuit. As part of the security team from the Olympics, I can tell you that most Black Bloc protestors weren't from Canada - a few were American, most were European.
As much as we'd like to have a low security profile for this type of event, it's just not possible in today's climate. Although many of you complain about the security pricetag, how many here would complain about the cleanup bill from a weeks worth of violent protests, vandalism, and other property destruction? Would it be in the $1 billion range? Not likely, but as we all know, sometimes it's not the value of the damage, but the strategic placement of the damage. Is it completely out to lunch to consider what would happen if protestors disrupted the Yonge/Bloor subway station for a week? Certainly not $1 billion worth of damage, but almost as much in economic disruption because it's harder for people to travel through the city.
That's the primary reason for the security price tag.
As for the figures cited for meetings in Pittsburgh, I can tell you that those are low-balled figures from the city on what THEY spent, not the total operation. American military spending on that operation was over $200 million. You can bet that state police, FBI, NSA, CIA, and a host of other organizations had significant budgets for that event. |

The cost of the proposed security may be justified and realistic, but if we knew that the amount was going to be so large, would we have wanted the summit in the first place?

I googled the cost of security for Vancouver Olympics, and it was about $1 billion by many estimates. At least that was for a MONTH worth of Olympics/Paralympics. And at least Canada got something out of that, in form of entertainment, infrastructure and tourism development, sports development and record-breaking medal haul (while leaving eastside Vancouver in the same shape as before). |

Olympics is a totally different event with different security needs.
Between the two summits you could say the G8/G20 is a week long, or half of the Olympics, but with about 10x the security threat. |

If they stayed with the plan of having both summits in Huntsville, instead of separating them and having the more expensive one in $$$ downtown Toronto, this wouldn't be news.
