Roll call: Steve Lawler @ Stereo, Friday, June 18th (pg. 13)

I have seen Lawler pretty much every time he's come to Toronto since 2004, and I can say that was one of the best sets I've ever heard from him. Sure, he had some boring moments, especially at the beginning, but he more than made up for it with many, many face-melting builds and drops, and a diverse selection of tracks. I give him big kudos as well for doing something I haven't seen him do in years: play some fun, big house music tracks near the end of his set. That was the perfect way to end it all.
Tone Depth was an OK warm-up, but he REALLY sucked at the end. I don't know what he was thinking playing that kind of music after Lawler. Totally out of place. After about 4 tracks, I left.
Stereo just kills any other club in Canada, and I will be making the trek back sooner or later (likely for Tenaglia).
I didn't meet many MTLTAs. Only Mrs. Haus and briefly 84th Ave. I wanted to meet Stereohead to see how she compared Friday night with the time he played in 2005, but never did.
You are all very lucky to have Stereo in your city! |

Nice to meet you Ms. Haus & Spin Laden. Hope to see you in the temple again one day....:) |
Nice to meet you as well as some of the other TOTA's as well. I kind of want to call you baby face from now on though. This is another time I have had a random TA sit beside me and then conversation gets going. Hunting me out I tell ya :p lol
I wasn't originally planning on going Friday night, but then my extreme boredom at home, and my love and desire for wanting to see Steve Lawler at Stereo got the best of me and then I decided very last minute to meet with Spin Laden and go to MTL with him. Best last minute plans, and money I have spent all year.
Anyhow I wasn't totally feeling Tone Depth set in the beginning of the night. I think he still did a very good job though like he didn't pound it out hard and over do it. He warmed up the crowd just right for Lawler, and didn't overshadow Lawlers set. I just didn't really get into it.
Sadly I have to admit this was my first time seeing Steve Lawler and I am so glad it was in Stereo. The best dance floor in the world. He started off with great techy tribalish sounding beats, and just built the crowd up and then dropped amazing tech, tribal beats. And then would slow you down let you catch your breath, maybe even get a little bored. And then would build you up again. I would have to say it was an incredible night in Stereo and I am defiantly not disappointed. I'm a little sad as well that he also only played for 4 hours but at least it was an amazing 4 hours. After Tone Depth came back on I was getting tired anyhow and so again wasn't feeling what he was playing. So decided to pack it in at 9:30 and take a craky metro trip back to my friends place. Lol those are always funny to me.
Very different crowd Friday night, much more hetero, and seemed a little younger as well. A couple of my other friends I was with said the same as well. And still found the right side of Stereo still had more room to dance around in because I still think everyone associates it with, "the other side of Stereo" and saw the most the most amount of clothing on people all night then I have ever seen. Probably because of a bigger hetero population for once. Meh works for me I had some decent straight eye candy to look at during the night, for once. |

Tone Depth did a Great Job Warming up the crowd, didn't push the Sound System too much, did his job well. One of my better Nights at the temple in a while, Lotta good energy on the dance Floor and saw a lot of StereoHeads. Lawler Played a little different then I thought, delivered all the way....The last hour of his set was really boring though....Thank God for Tone Depth....cause he took it to the Level Lawler couldn't. Banging Track Selections till the End.
Kotsy Good to meet you man, Glad you enjoyed your First Stereo Experience. |

| What I find it quite impressive about Stereo is how the lights are used, how they are sequenced with the intensity and subtlety of the music. You can go to many places with strobes, lazers, and so on but the folks at Stereo definitely know how to synch the lighting with the music. |

| I am glad there are mixed reviews, doesn't seem like I missed too much of an insane night :p |

| I loved when Tone Depth was playing around 9:15-9:30 and the smoke machines just filled up the room. Since the floor wasn't full you just saw peoples heads slowly moving side to side. With the lights it gave a really cool eerie feeling. |

Although I do like the lighting at Stereo, I found the strobes were way too over done as the night went on. |

that was the one faux pas, almost like there were two ppl doing the lights: one who did it artfully and the other like a caveman :p
there was one seizure on the dancefloor, no one wrote about that so far as if it was repressed freudian style :p. Hopefully it wasn't the strobes à la Bal en Blanc this year. |

| I was actually just about the mention the collapse on the dancefloor. Did anyone else notice that? First time I have ever seen that at Stereo. It took forever for security to get to it, and then had 3 people carry him out. |

I was dancing on the stage when it happened and saw everything, I thought it was an OD or something. The lights weren't that intense were they?
About the hetereo crowd, I'm pretty sure it had to do with Angel Morales spinning saturday night, lawdddy knows the gays like Morales. |
