Havent read all the reviews but this is how i saw the night....
Got there at around 3.15, Tonedepth was playing very nice, great warm up set for the hr that i saw him, threw in some hard tracks, house, got the crowd up and going
As for Lawler, my expectations were low, I hadent seen him since last Canada Day @ Guv, where he was all up in the african loop, and much harder, so i went in with 0 expectations.
I personally loved lawlers style, started off with some groove, lighter tech house (exactlty what i am into at the moment) and built from there. He played a variety of sounds, it was really great to hear esp from the last time @ stereo, where Victor was playing techno for 8 hrs straight. I personally, like when a DJ goes up and down, keeps you interested in the set and is less predictable. He started playing harder, even some techno, but again would slow it down (very key, who knows maybe im starting to get old, cant take that hard straight anymore :p)
He played some Federico Locchi tracks, and Joris Voorn - the secret, some others but cant rememember now (currently at work). I found his set to be fresh, mixing very on cue and tight, no mistakes...there were a few tracks that i was looking around saying 'wtf', but nobody's perfect. Glad i went.
Futhermore, not sure if it was just beacuse it was a Friday, or because it was Lawler (or a combo of both) but it was a very straight crowd, with lots of beautiful women everywhere (maybe the reason why I enjoyed that night so much loool :stongue: ) The corwd was more clubish then usual, very pushy, rude people. Took me a while to get into it fully
Nice meeting DJ-Lift finally, and the TOTA's (esp the guy with the CZ shirt!) and always great partying with the OTT-TAs LOL
overall great night, didnt stay too long, good experience! |

I know this is a long shot, but during Tone Depth's closing set, he played this track with almost orchestral chords, and this 'Whoom/Boom' sound, it was a vocal sample that sounded really dark and tribal-ish, and during the song, there was a "Stereo Montreal" voice over. Track was playing at 8:45am.
Anyone? |

Ya I noticed there was this little blonde girl you were hanging out with off and on during the night, she looked kind of cute :p
And you just met DJ Lift wow I really thought you had met him before. |

Where is superfly Stereohead's review? :p
This thread is more like a Steve Lawler appreciation one, reminds me of when TA used to have roll calls and reviews more often. |

outside of Mrs Haus and the bathroom drag queen there wasn't much to look at.. I think I need to bring 84th up north to Beach Club and Red Lite for more eye candy. |

I feel that everytime I go. And I still didn't "get into it" since it reopened |

Here is my review (better late than never):
- Tone Depth: the programming in his opening set was a little 'off', as if he didn't know when Lawler would come on. Also, I thought he played too proggy for someone like Lawler. For instance, he finished his set with his own 2010 remix of Rumblefish, which was nice, but not in line with what Lawler was going to drop. Again, the programming in his finishing set was average at best. He dropped some nice techno tracks (like the excellent Dyno remix of The Road Leads East) here and there but the got lost within the other prog tracks. I prefer when he plays a peak time set.
- Lawler: I'll be honest by saying I was expecting a set full of tracks similar to what he releases on Viva...but was pleasently surprised by the fact that he played tracks with more 'energy'. He basically played more driving stuff that I thought he would. However, after he built up a nice set, he played a very good techno section (that was started by the Santos remix of Alex Flatner and Oliver Klein's Outlandos)...but couldn't keep it up after. The energy level was brought down and it seemed like he didn't know what to play. It was nice to hear The Secret and Oxia remix of San Trope but everyone play these tracks and I believe that he should have played more driving stuff at that point. The crowd seemed to think the same as many people left at that time. It was still a good set.
- Crowd: The youngest and 'clubbiest' crowd I've ever seen at Stereo. You could tell a lot of them came to Stereo once the clubs had closed because it seems they all arrived around 3:30-4:00 and also left early. They didn't seem to really care for the music that much...
- Sound: It was my first time at the new Stereo and, to me, the sound is not as crisp as before. The highs and mids seemed less clear and the tracks were missing a bit of 'kick'.
I still had a good time because I had around 20 friends who were there and I really liked the new layout. I would go back if an interesting dj would play Stereo in the near future. |
